Substantial cost increase by energy supplier forces organic grower to file for bankruptcy

0

Organic greenhouse vegetable grower Oirschot Organics from Middelbeers was declared bankrupt this week. According to the trustee, the reason for this is a claim from an energy supplier that was recently submitted to the grower.

The claim came rather suddenly, as the greenhouse complex of about 2.5 hectares was prepared for a new crop this winter. The grower has a combined heat and power system. The plants had even been planted. “The organic market is doing relatively well, so it was not the case that the grower had been heading for bankruptcy for some time,” says Geurt te Biesebeek of Aben & Slag Advocaten. “There is an acute liquidity problem because of the claim.”

In the coming period, the trustee will further investigate the cause of the bankruptcy. Both the option of a restart and reaching a settlement with the energy supplier are on the table. However, the trustee emphasizes that he is not a mediator. “As usual, I serve the interests of all creditors in the bankruptcy.

Oirschot Organics provided the trustee with payroll with twenty employees on it. They are now without work. The trustee hopes for a continuation of the company, preferably in the short term. Interested parties can come forward to make an offer.

Kelowna naturopathic doctor speaks in favour of vaccine mandate

Dr. Ali McMillan says, though she can’t speak for everyone in her profession, she’s in favour of all healthcare staffers being vaccinated whenever they can be.

“We often see patients with compromised immune systems and at the end of the day, their safety matters more than pretty much everything else,” said McMillian.

“So I wouldn’t want to spread a potentially life-threatening infection to patients.”

With the new mandate, patients with a compromised immune system may feel safer going to see healthcare workers, McMillan added.

The vaccine mandate that applies to all health professionals in British Columbia will go into effect on March 24, Bonnie Henry announced Wednesday.

“I have spoken many times about the importance of all of us as healthcare professionals doing everything we can, and it is our obligation to make sure that we’re taking all of the measures to protect those patients in our care, especially the more vulnerable people that we serve,” said Henry.

“As well, it is important for us to protect our own health as part of being able to continue to contribute to the healthcare of others during this challenging time.”

McMillan says she likes the direction the province is moving towards with this mandate, however she doesn’t believe it will change much in terms of the pandemic.

“I’m not sure if this or anything else is going to bring the pandemic to an end, but it is what it is. I think people are doing their best to try and mitigate the damage,” said McMillan.

While vaccinated people are now catching the Omicron variant of the virus frequently, Dr. Henry dismissed the claims that the COVID-19 vaccine provides no protection against transmission.

“The difference in spread between somebody who’s vaccinated and (somebody who’s) unvaccinated is like saying (Canadian soccer star) Christine Sinclair and I both play soccer,” Henry said this week.

Of confirmed cases between Feb. 2 and 8 in B.C., a not vaccinated person has a case rate per 100,000 after adjusting for age of 353.0. A fully vaccinated person has a rate of 138.5.

Chiropractors are among the professions impacted by the mandate. In December, Kelowna chiropractor Mark Foullong authored a resolution for the College of Chiropractors of B.C., to “take a stand to protect and maintain the right to medical freedom of choice.” Seventy-eight percent of people in attendance supported it.

In response, the B.C. Chiropractic Association released a statement following the resolution, and stated that the association represents 85 percent of the chiropractors in the province, and “the views expressed at the CCBC (Annual General Meeting) are not representative of the association.”

They noted that of the over 1,300 licensed chiropractors in British Columbia, approximately 15% of registrants were present in that meeting.

“The BCCA Board of Directors appreciates and fully supports the efforts of Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Minister of Health Adrian Dix as they navigate the province of BC through this global health crisis,” said the association.

The Great Lakes are essential to the health and well-being of millions of Canadians for safe water supply and the sustainability of our ecosystems. Protecting one of the largest surface freshwater systems in the world is vital, which is why the Government of Canada is collaborating with local partners to find the best ways to keep water safe, clean, and well-managed.

Today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, announced that the Government of Canada is investing more than $3.1 million over three years in thirty-two new projects funded under the Great Lakes Protection Initiative. The projects will address priorities to restore water quality and ecosystem health in Areas of Concern, prevent toxic and nuisance algae, and enhance engagement with Indigenous Peoples and the public.

Protecting freshwater demands a collaborative approach. Environment and Climate Change Canada has launched a new call for proposals for project funding under the Great Lakes Protection Initiative for 2022–2023. Applications will be accepted until January 31, 2022.

Newly funded projects include $240,000 over three years to support the Raisin Region Conservation Authority in its efforts to restore and protect the coastal wetland of the Bainsville Bay Marsh, which will sustain fish and wildlife habitat in the St. Lawrence River Area of Concern. The Royal Botanical Gardens’ Wetlands Rehabilitation Program will receive $425,000 over two years to restore wetlands in the Hamilton Harbour Area of Concern. Project funding to support the engagement of Indigenous Peoples in addressing Great Lakes issues includes $150,000 over two years for Wasauksing First Nation to work with local communities along the shores of Lake Huron and Lake Superior to create and promote community-specific fish consumption advisories. The funded projects build on previous and ongoing initiatives that support the government’s commitment to take active steps to protect and clean up the Great Lakes and other large lakes.

Quotes

“The Great Lakes are immensely important—they are ecologically rich, an economic driver, the source of water for forty million people, and an inspiration for song, storytelling, and exploration. We’re investing in local projects that advance collaborative efforts to restore and protect Great Lakes water quality and ecosystem health. By working with regional partners and Indigenous Peoples, we are protecting this important resource for future generations to use and enjoy.”

Internationally Acclaimed Fitness Franchise P.volve Expands Footprint Into Canada

0

The functional movement franchise is seeking to fulfill increasing demand throughout one of its top 3 markets, with plans for new locations in TorontoVancouverCalgaryMontreal and Edmonton to name a few, aiming to exceed 50 locations in the country by 2026.

P.volve, the celebrity-loved functional movement franchise, has announced ambitious growth plans for Canada, targeting the markets of TorontoVancouverCalgaryMontreal and Edmonton — territories that already represent the brand’s top five markets in terms of digital members, and demand continues to increase.

In Toronto alone, P.volve has earned more than 1,500 users over the past year. RJ Krone, P.volve’s vice president of studio and franchise operations, says all signs point towards continued growth throughout the country.

“There are different pockets of the U.S., the U.K. and Canada where we’ve been established for years but we continue to see substantial room for growth,” he said. “Demand for our services is increasing sharply in Canada, and we are prepared to meet that demand.”

The fitness franchise’s hybrid model combines a global, on-demand platform and an in-person, high-end studio experience that gives members a full-service experience wherever they are. The brand leverages its patented equipment line for an expert-designed program of functional movements designed to strengthen the entire body, improve mobility and posture and reduce everyday pain. Bridging the fitness and healthcare space, P.volve has revolutionized the vanity-driven fitness industry with a holistic approach and a special focus on improving women’s health.

P.volve already has awarded its first new location in Canada, said Alex Puccillo, P.volve’s director of franchise development. “Our first franchise agreement was executed the first week of this year.”

As the brand seeks more qualified franchise owners throughout the country, P.volve will continue to host Discovery Days — including virtual Discovery Days, when necessary — allowing prospective franchise owners to meet the corporate team and experience a comprehensive introduction to the brand’s operational model.

“We’ve managed to create a virtual discovery day that is nearly as hands-on as the in-person event,” explained Krone. “It’s not just going through a PowerPoint presentation and telling them more about our company.”

P.volve kicks Discovery Day off with a virtual workout over Zoom that is led by one of their expert trainers and incorporates stretch and movement breaks throughout the day.

“We’re getting to know the candidates, answering all their questions, and showing them exactly what makes P.volve special. That experience builds a level of trust that is core to our model; our franchisees need to know we have their back,” said Krone

As P.volve embarks on its mission to establish new locations in all 10 Canadian provinces, the brand is leveraging its enviable social media following to attract new franchisee candidates.

“Our strong digital and social media presence paired with the research we’ve done on other boutiques, we feel that 100+ studios in all 10 Canadian provinces is well within our reach,” said Puccillo.

First Gynecological Procedures Performed with Medtronic Hugo™ Robotic-Assisted Surgery System

0

The Six Gynecological Procedures Took Place Earlier This Month at Pacifica Salud Hospital in Panama City, Panama

Medtronic plc (NYSE:MDT), the global leader in medical technology, today announced the first gynecological (GYN) procedures with the Hugo™ robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system. The six cases included hysterectomies and myomectomies performed by Salomón Zebede, M.D., and Juan Carlos López, M.D., last week at Pacifica Salud Hospital in Panama City, Panama.

“As the cornerstone of our new robotic surgery program, the Hugo RAS system is playing a critical role in bringing the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to more patients in our region,” said Dr. Zebede. “It was energizing to perform the very first GYN procedure with the Hugo system, and encouraging to experience firsthand the possibility this technology brings to women’s health.”

Globally, more than 60% of hysterectomies are performed as open procedures,1 even though minimally invasive surgery offers fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster return to normal activities.2-4

Pacifica Salud is the latest institution to join Medtronic’s Partners in Possibility Program, a group of pioneering hospitals that will be among the first in the world to use the Hugo RAS system. Earlier this month, the hospital announced its first five urological cases with the Hugo RAS system. Pacifica Salud is also an early adopter of Touch Surgery™ Enterprise, a cloud-based surgical video capture solution that allows surgeons to seamlessly record, analyze, and share surgical video.

“We are witnessing the dawn of a new era in robotic surgery,” said Mr. Rafael Cohen, CEO of Pacifica Salud. “That is made possible by the Hugo system, our partnership with Medtronic, and our talented team at Pacifica Salud.”

The Hugo RAS system — Medtronic’s solution to historic cost and utilization barriers that have kept surgical robotics out of reach for many hospitals — is a modular, multi-quadrant platform designed for a broad range of soft-tissue procedures. In June, Medtronic announced the first clinical procedures with the Hugo system took place in Santiago, Chile. That marked the beginning of the Hugo RAS system patient registry, which is collecting clinical data to support regulatory submissions around the world.

“As an OB/GYN, I’m incredibly passionate about advancing women’s health and wellbeing through less invasive solutions that improve outcomes and enable a better quality of life,” said Carla Peron, M.D., chief medical officer of the Surgical Robotics business, which is part of Medical Surgical Portfolio at Medtronic. “The first GYN procedures with the Hugo RAS system represent an exciting step toward expanding access to more treatment options, including the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery, to women everywhere.”

Medtronic has a longstanding history of making a positive impact on women’s health through technology. The Hugo RAS system joins a portfolio of gynecological products designed to enable less invasive surgical treatment of a range of conditions including abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids, and endometrial cancer.

“I’m proud of the work we’re doing at Medtronic with our healthcare partners around the world to improve women’s health,” said Megan Rosengarten, president of Surgical Robotics. “Advancing access for women to minimally invasive surgical care is a great responsibility and privilege, which makes today’s announcement about the Hugo system all the more meaningful.”

The Hugo RAS system is not cleared or approved in the U.S. or Europe. Regulatory requirements of individual countries and regions will determine availability and approval or clearance timelines. Touch Surgery Enterprise is available in the U.S. and Europe; it is not intended to direct surgery, or aid in diagnosis or treatment of a disease or condition.

Health Canada approves Pfizer’s COVID-19 therapeutic

Antiviral Paxlovid reduces rate of hospitalization and death among high-risk COVID-19 patients

Health Canada has approved Pfizer’s COVID-19 therapeutic for use in adults 18 and older, paving the way for the distribution of a potentially lifesaving drug at a time when the country’s hospitals are overwhelmed.

Pfizer’s Paxlovid, an oral antiviral prescribed by a doctor and administered in pill form, is designed to help the body fight off the SARS-CoV-2 virus, reduce symptoms from an infection and shorten the period of illness.

After months of clinical trials, Pfizer reported in November that Paxlovid reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by an impressive 89 per cent compared to a placebo in non-hospitalized high-risk adults with COVID-19.

The drug company’s laboratory studies also indicate the drug is likely to work against the Omicron variant, now the dominant variant among new cases in Canada.

The product has been hailed as a pandemic “game changer” by some doctors because it could reduce hospitalizations and deaths among COVID-19 patients.

Experts say an effective pill that’s easy to self-administer at home could relieve some of the pressure on the health care system and change the trajectory of the pandemic. Existing therapeutics approved for use in Canada — products like monoclonal antibodies and remdesivir — must be administered intravenously in a hospital setting.

Dr. Supriya Sharma, chief medical adviser to the deputy minister of health, announces Canada’s approval of a new prescription COVID treatment. 1:29

Speaking at a press conference with reporters Monday, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, said the regulator’s approval is “great news” because Paxlovid could drive down severe outcomes in the current wave and beyond.

“The regulator as well as the experts helping us with the guidance and the supply are all coming together at once and I think Canadians should be very happy today to hear that oral antivirals are beginning to become available in Canada,” she said.

Canada has placed an order for an initial quantity of one million treatment courses, with an option to buy up to 500,000 more. With global interest in antivirals running high as the Omicron variant wreaks havoc, Pfizer is promising to churn out 120 million courses of the treatment by year’s end.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said 30,000 treatment courses have arrived in Canada already and will be distributed to the provinces and territories on a per-capita basis.

Duclos said another 120,000 Paxlovid treatments will arrive between now and the end of March. The federal government is working with Pfizer to bring “additional treatment courses to Canada as quickly as possible,” he said.

Health minister says Canada should have 150,000 Paxlovid treatments by March

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says over 120,000 Paxlovid treatments are expected by March, in addition to the 30,000 already distributed. 1:02

While championing Paxlovid as a treatment that will “save lives, reduce illness and lighten the load on our health care system,” Duclos said this antiviral is not a replacement for vaccines, which remain the best way to keep people out of hospital.

“This is welcome news — we have one more tool in our toolbox. But no drug, including Paxlovid, can replace vaccination and public health measures,” he said. “You don’t want to have to use that pill if you can instead be vaccinated. Vaccination will be a lot better in protecting you.”

Tam said the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is working with its provincial and territorial counterparts to determine how best to distribute antivirals, which are expected to be in short supply for the foreseeable future.

“This treatment, the first treatment taken orally and at home, will be in high demand,” she said. “We anticipate supply at the beginning will not be great anywhere.”

The product, which doesn’t prevent infection, has been authorized by Health Canada for use in high-risk adults with mild or moderate COVID-19 symptoms.

A spokesperson for Ontario’s Health Minister Christine Elliott said the country’s largest province will earmark its share — about 10,000 courses of treatment to start — for adults with “the highest risk of severe outcomes, including immunocompromised patients.”

A person should start taking Paxlovid no more than five days after symptoms start, which could be “one of the key challenges of these antivirals,” Tam said.

‘An important tool’

“They have to be given really early. Not easy, but everybody needs to give it a good try because it could be an important tool going forward,” she said. “It could potentially blunt the severity of the virus, which is a key goal.”

Health Canada said Pfizer’s pills should only be used by patients who have tested positive on a SARS-CoV-2 viral test. Such tests are currently in short supply in some provinces and territories. If a PCR test is not available, Tam said a positive result on a rapid antigen test would also suffice.

Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist and researcher based at Toronto General Hospital, said Health Canada’s approval is “a very positive first step.”

“Everything we’ve heard about this pill is very promising but there are clearly logistical challenges ahead,” he said, adding that careful planning is required to make sure the pills get to those who need them most.

This drug regimen could be useful for people who have underlying conditions that increase the risk of hospitalization and death related to the coronavirus, such as heart disease or diabetes.

It could also be given to the unvaccinated, who are much more likely to experience severe outcomes. Tam pointed to PHAC data that suggest unvaccinated people are 19 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than fully vaccinated people.

Health Canada has warned, however, that the product shouldn’t be used while a patient is on any of a long list of other drugs, including common medications used to treat erectile dysfunction, high cholesterol and seasonal allergies, among others.

“If you’re on certain medications, you have to be careful when using this drug,” Tam said, urging prescribers to review contraindications before writing a script for Paxlovid.

Pfizer’s treatment is meant to be taken as 30 pills over five days. Patients take three pills at a time: two of Pfizer’s pills and one of a low-dose HIV drug known as ritonavir, which helps Pfizer’s drug remain active in the body longer.

The Benefits of Eggnog

0

What is Eggnog?
Eggnog is a spiced and sweetened drink made from cream, milk, and eggs dating back to hundreds of years. Today, the flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg have made it popular in the United States and Canada. This beverage is often included as a part of the abundance at holiday celebrations. This sweet drink can be homemade or bought from the store and is commonly ‘spiked’ with brandy, rum, or even whiskey. Due to its strong flavor, eggnog remains palatable and is traditionally quite high in alcohol content. Consumers should use responsible judgment when adding alcohol ‘to taste’. One can also replace dairy milk or cream by using other alternatives like soy milk and soy-based cream if suffering from lactose intolerance.

Advocaat is a Dutch beverage that is similar to eggnog, except that it’s made using only egg yolks. It is richer than eggnog, and can even have the consistency of a custard. Other cultures have developed similar drinks, including the Polish ajerkoniak, and Mexico’s rompope.

Nutrition
Like most treats, this beverage should be enjoyed in moderation. 1 cup of eggnog contains 19 grams of fat and 344 calories. For perspective, it would take a 40-minute jog to burn those calories off!

Benefits
There are some surprising health benefits to eggnog.

  • Organic milk contains saturated fats that can lower cholesterol
  • Omega 3-fatty acid present in this drink helps prevent cardiovascular diseases.
  • Milk is loaded with calcium, which our bodies need for strong bones, teeth, hair, and nails
  • Due to the milk content, it also promotes healthy ocular function

Eggnog Uses
This beverage has a few uses, including the following:

  • Add it to coffee or pancake batter for a subtle flavor
  • Use an electric mixer to turn it into whipped cream or cake frosting
  • Replace regular milk with eggnog to give your oatmeal

Side Effects

    • The most common side effect due to the overindulgence of eggnog is weight gain.
    • People with milk or egg allergies, especially children, should avoid the drink.

Although hormones in milk are a concern expressed by some, there is currently no scientific evidence that links hormones in bovine milk to cancer in humans or early puberty in children. Dairy alternatives such as soy may contain estrogen-like substances that can disrupt the endocrine system in people of all genders.
