Young entrepreneur from St. John's wins $25

An article in the Vancouver Sun cited B.C. retailers as starting off to a strong start to the 2015 fiscal year.

According to the report by Colliers International Consulting, Apple has been named Canada’s most productive retailer and Weston Group as the largest retailer.

The report, Collier’s spring 2015 National Retail Report, says that B.C.’s first-quarter sales growth were nearly 8 per cent. This is preceded by a strong 2014 where sales worth $66.4 billion were reported. The figure reported by Collier exceeded its own predictions by 0.3 per cent.

Ontario, on the other hand, had sales of $172.6 billion and a 4 per cent growth rate in the first quarter, coming in second after B.C. Alberta, the third biggest retail market in 2014, came in at $78.7 billion in sales.

Fibrin and Stem Cell Patches Show Promise for Heart Healing

0

Findings of a study published in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine demonstrate the promise in regenerating cardiac tissue using engineered patches made up of a mixture of fibrin and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from human umbilical cord blood.

Previous studies show the potential of MSCs to repair damage left by a heart attack, but in these instances, the cells were delivered through injections or intravenously. According to Antoni Bayes-Genis, a lead investigator on this study, “while feasible and safe, the treatments exhibited only modest benefits.”

Researchers think there might be a better way to deliver the MSCs to the injured site. Scaffolds (or patches) in which the cells are combined with biological and synthetic materials that can also be supplemented with growth/differentiation factors to generate bioimplants, have emerged as a promising candidate. However, none of the current materials being tested for the patches, whether synthetic or natural, have demonstrated optimal properties for cardiac tissue repair.

Dr. Bayes-Genis and his colleagues investigated how a fibrin patch filled with human umbilical cord blood-derived MSCs might work. The team mixed MSCs and fibrin to form the patches and then administered them in a group of mice that had undergone heart attacks. Three weeks later, they compared the animals’ recovery to a control group of mice treated with fibrin alone (no stem cells) and another control group that received no treatment at all.  The results showed that the patches adhered well to the hearts and the MSCs demonstrated early proliferation and differentiation. The patch cells also participated in the formation of new, functional blood vessels that connected the patch to both the heart tissue directly beneath it and the mouse’s circulatory system, too.

“As a result, the heart function in this group of mice was better than that of the animals in either of the other control groups,” Dr. Bayes-Genis said. “Thus, this study provides promising findings for the use of umbilical cord-blood MSCs and fibrin patches in cardiac repair.”

Linda Bolton – Natural Calm

Linda Bolton - Natural Calm

LindaWhat does it take to be listed among top female entrepreneurs two years in a row? How does a female entrepreneur get nominated for an award honouring and recognizing her unrelenting hard work and dedication to her cause? Linda Bolton founder of Natural Calm Canada knows exactly how to do all that. Last year, she was nominated as one of the top female entrepreneurs in Canada and ranked 67 out of 100 in the W100 PROFIT/Chatelaine Canadian female entrepreneur list, this year she was 48.

Not surprisingly, Bolton is also nominated for the RBC Canadian Women of Influence Award. A decade ago, she dedicated her retirement to raising funds for impoverished kids in Africa through her non-profit Organics 4 Orphans. Every penny of profit Bolton gained from Natural Calm Canada went into building better lives for families in poverty-stricken countries. But reaching this height of success wasn’t an easy journey.

From the days of working 60–80 hour work weeks and attending numerous trade shows, Bolton has now become influential in the natural health product business and is recognized in circles of successful women entrepreneurs as evidenced by the awards she has received and is nominated for. Bolton says appearing on the W100 PROFIT/Chatelaine list twice has boosted her business spirit and using the contacts she made through the platform, she was able to spread Natural Calm’s name far and wide.

[blockquote style=”center” color=”#0a0a0a” bg_color=”#f5eded” border_color=”#f5d908″]“I’ve appeared in both PROFITguide.com and Chatelaine in the last two years,” she explains. “Last year, I sent out a hundred packages to all the women listed on the W100 and outlined to them how they can use magnesium to help alleviate the stress in their very busy lives.”[/blockquote]

Bolton believes personal award is a reflection of the immense success of Natural Calm. Being honoured for her achievements related to Natural Calm is a clear and positive endorsement of the products. Her success as an entrepreneur is directly attributable to the success the brand has seen since its introduction in 2004 and vice versa. Bolton has been and remains the principal face of Natural Calm in Canada.

Clearly, her unmatched success in the world of natural health products with Natural Calm has lead to the business world recognizing her triumphs. To those who sell Natural Calm in their stores, the partnership takes on a whole new meaning, as they see a close link between her personal achievement and the products. For them, the reciprocal success of Natural Calm and Bolton creates a positive vibe. The upward movement in the last two years shows that the owner of Natural Calm Canada has created an unbeatable momentum.

Proven by Bolton’s nomination and place in the W100 list for two years in a row, Natural Calm stands as the top-selling brand of magnesium in North America. And as a retailer and consumer, who wouldn’t want to be associated with winners such as Bolton and Natural Calm.

Canadian retail sales dropped unexpectedly by 0.1 per cent in April this year after showing two months of gain. Statistics Canada data indicated that this is due to lower spending at food and electronic stores.

Predictions for a 0.7 per cent increase was disproved and Statscan had to revise March’s month-on-month gain to 0.9 per cent.

Nick Exarhos, CIBC economist, said this is a negative for April’s GDP outlook and that this was bad news for the loonie as well.

Sales in 11 subsectors fell in April accounting for 43 per cent of retail trade, in terms of volume, retail sales dropped by 0.2 per cent.

Moreover, sales at food and beverage stores also fell by 1.3 per cent, making this the third decrease in four months. According to StasCan, inflation rate in May also increased to 0.9 per cent from 0.8 per cent.

Germany-based Metro to expand using cyberspace

Retail sales in Canada have risen for the sixth consecutive month

Metro AG has shown inclination to spending more on online and international expansions after its Kaufhof department store chain was sold for 2.8 billion Euro ($3.18 billion).

Aside from opening more of its Media Markt and Saturn discount electronics stores outside Germany, the company’s chairman of the management board says there are other investments to be looked at.

Olaf Koch said in an interview to a magazine that the company plans on expanding with investments in digital businesses, modernisation of older stores, additional stores in foreign locations for Metro Cash & Carry, Media Markt and Saturn.

Canadian Hudson’s Bay has shown interest in helping expand Kaufhof’s e-commerce by taking advantage of the role its stores play as local distribution centres to beat other online-only rivals. This strategy is called “omnichannel.”

Even though e-commerce has been on the rise in Germany, the country being Amazon’s second-biggest market, local stores have been slower to respond and board the online wagon.

This led to the finalization of the Administrative Monetary Penalties (Consumer Products) Regulations, including fines of up to $25,000 per day if companies do not comply with orders under the CCPSA.

According to the CCPSA, manufacturers are required to report any incident concerning their product within the country or if it has been recalled in another country.

In effect, this Act has allowed the government to deal effectively with companies that withhold safety information or sell products that pose a threat to the health and safety of Canadians.

New policy development system launched by CPhA

Pharmacare 2.0 is a four-stage policy development process designed to build a Canadian consensus and restart the pharmacare conversation.

[blockquote style=”center” color=”#0f0e0e” bg_color=”#f5dada” border_color=”#e6d157″]”It’s time to change the pharmacare narrative; governments’ current approach to improving affordability and access to drugs through a singular preoccupation on reducing drug prices does not address the key concerns of Canadians—improving health outcomes and the long- term sustainability of public drug plans,” said Perry Eisenschmid, CEO, Canadian Pharmacists Association. “The focus of CPhA‘s pharmacare initiative is building a sustainable health care system by providing optimal patient-centred care at an affordable price.”[/blockquote]

With effect immediately, the CPhA will undertake conversations with key stakeholders to develop principles, policies and priorities for national pharmacare. The system will use the expertise and first-hand knowledge of pharmacists regarding current barriers to drug therapies.

The findings from these discussions will fuel the nationwide conversation and advance CPhA’s advocacy efforts through the approaching federal election campaign. It will lead to the formation of a Health Care Consensus Working Group. The group will prepare a national pharmacare model and unveil it in 2016.
