Plant protein brand awarded top honours at Canadian Grand Prix

A survey conducted on a sample of over 3,000 Canadians turned back a ranking of 249 brands in 22 different industries. The results indicated that homegrown brands such as Tim Hortons and President’s Choice and Shoppers Drug Mart are trusted most by Canadians.

The brands were scored on attributes such as quality, innovation, value, leadership and social responsibility among a total of 40 attributes. All of them aimed at assessing factors influencing consumer trust.

The survey was conducted at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria. The school plans on  making the Gustavson Brand Trust Index an annual release.

The study also found that consumers measure trust on two different levels: functional and emotional. Functional trust measures quality, reliability and consistency. However, what’s more interesting to Dr. Saul Klein, dean of the business school is the emotional trust.

It is defined by factors including workplace practices, environmental policies and community responsibility.

The survey also found that women tend to trust brands more than men do and that older consumers trust top brands more than younger consumers do and that brands in the financial, travel and utility industries are the least trusted of all.

New Research Identifies Consumer “Food and Fitness Continuum”

0

ThinkstockPhotos-87177554DuPont Nutrition & Health has introduced an insight-driven webinar based on the data collected from more than 13,000 consumers in 21 countries. The webinar has been designed to help manufacturers develop and market sports nutrition and weight management products.

The DuPont Nutrition & Health research, conducted with HealthFocus® International, found the traditional distinctions between the sports nutrition and weight management categories have narrowed and are better represented as a single market that exists along a continuum. This “Food and Fitness Continuum” contains three core consumer segments: personal record performers (competitive, performance-focused individuals), enlightened actives (consumers striving to eat healthy foods to support their active lifestyles) and motivated strugglers (consumers recognizing that weight loss is necessary but who find dieting difficult). Research on these core targets as well as multiple points along the continuum sheds new light on consumer needs, motivations and behaviors for manufacturers.

“We’ve seen a blurring of the lines between the sports nutrition and weight management markets,” said Greg Paul, Ph.D., MBA, global marketing director consumer segments at DuPont Nutrition & Health and one of the presenters for the webinar. “Consumption of sports nutrition products has moved beyond the hard core athlete to a more mainstream consumer, while at the other end of the spectrum consumers concerned about their weight have replaced the traditional notion of the short-term diet with a broader and more sustained commitment to a healthy lifestyle. The confluence of these two trends has resulted in the emergence of the continuum.”

The participants can also get more information on subjects and ingredients related to sports nutrition and weight management including muscle health and performance, probiotics, soy protein, fiber and ingredients that promote cardiovascular fitness.

Labels to get plainer language with new regulation

The FDA recommends amending testosterone drug labels

Starting June manufacturers of prescription drugs will be required to submit mock-ups of labels and packages for Health Canada review.

This is part of the new Health Canada Plain Language Labelling Regulations that also requires that drugs are administered or obtained through a health professional. A similar regulation is set to come into effect in 2017.

The goal of this regulation is to make drug labels and packaging information easier to read and understand.

The regulations amending the Food and Drug Regulations (Labelling, Packaging and Brand Names of Drugs for Human Use) were published in July 2014 and are part of the Plain Language Labelling Initiative.

Landmark trial will be first to study safety and efficacy of a series of cannabinoid profiles

0

On June 23, 2015, Prairie Plant Systems and CanniMed along with researchers at McGill University Health Centre and Dalhousie Universities, officially started patient engagement on the CAPRI Trial (Cannabinoid Profile Investigation of Vaporized Cannabis in Patients with Osteoarthritis of the Knee) – a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled, proof-of-concept, crossover clinical trial of single dose vaporized cannabis in adults with painful osteoarthritis of the knee.

The CAPRI, being the first medical trial registered with Health Canada after the transition to the new Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR), will seek to understand the analgesic dose-response of several varieties of medical cannabis, consisting of varying concentrations of the two most common active ingredients: delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). It will also explore the short-term safety of vaporized cannabis as well as look at functional changes and patient preference.

“Anecdotal evidence supporting cannabis as a medicine is increasing, however this isn’t quite good enough for our patients,” said Brent Zettl, President and CEO of Prairie Plant Systems Inc. and CanniMed Ltd. “In order for medical cannabis to become a true medicine, it requires carefully conducted trials to provide hard data. It is our ongoing mission to support patients and their prescribing physicians with more research into the safety and efficacy of these cannabis based products to ensure predictable and standardized treatment options in the near future.”

The CAPRI Trial will be recruiting 40 patients suffering from serious osteoarthritis of the knee over the two trial sites in Montreal, QC and Halifax, NS. Patient recruitment started on June 23 at the McGill University Health Centre, and Dalhousie University will begin to recruit patients shortly.

“This clinical trial significantly advances medical cannabis research in Canada,” said Dr. Mark Ware, CAPRI trial primary investigator and practicing pain physician at the McGill University Health Centre, and Executive Director of the Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids (CCIC). “This research will help to start answering important questions physicians have regarding dosing as well as short term safety and efficacy related to specific ratios of cannabinoids.”

“We are very pleased to see that the CAPRI clinical trial is underway and beginning recruitment,” said Joanne Simons, chief mission officer, The Arthritis Society. “We know that many people living with arthritis seek alternative options for pain relief, including medical cannabis. Well-designed clinical research is a pre-requisite to get us to where we want to go: more treatment options available to help people manage the pain of arthritis.”
