Costco meets demand for organics

CVS expands healthy foods initiative

Costco is starting to work directly with farmers by helping them by land and equipment to grow organic foods, according to a Seattle Times report.CEO Craig Jelinek touted the vast amounts food sold by Costco last year in a recent shareholder meeting. However, Jelinek told investors, “We cannot get enough organics to stay in business day in and day out.”
Getting creative, Costco has devised a plan to meet the growing demand for organic foods by:
– lending money to farmers, raising chickens at its poulty plant in Alabama
– working with a Mexican vendor to get wild shrimp
– contracting with Nebraskan farmers to raise cattle on organic fields
Currently, reports state that Costco is only working with one partner so far, Andrew and Williamson Fresh Produce, but is looking to expand its initiative.
Organic food sales have grown from US$11.13 billion in 2004 to US$35.95 billion in 2014, according to the Organic Trade Association.
“Demand is increasing. But we’re not seeing the same level of farmland,” Angela Jagiello, a spokeswoman from OTA, said.

Bringing Walmart Neighbourhood Markets to Canada

Bringing Walmart Neighbourhood Markets to Canada

Walmart’s standalone Neighbourhood Markets could be introduced to Canada’s heated grocery battle, says a recent retail analyst conducted by Desjardins.
“We speculate Walmart Canada may test this concept in Canada within the next three years,” writes Keith Howlett, a Desjardins analyst, in a client note.
The stores have been successful in the U.S. market, seeing growth over 20 straight quarters. Walmart has seen a seven per cent increase in same-store sales in the most recent quarter.
The Neighbourhood Market stores are about a fifth of the size of the retailer’s supercentres and offer a full selection of grocery and pharmacy items at discount pricing.
This will be a new direction for the retailer, as they change strategies with their Walmart Express locations.
In Canada, grocers “continue to grapple with the growth of Walmart Canada in discount groceries, and the increasing appeal of Canada’s narrow selection of grocery product items to middle- and higher-income households,” Howlett writes.
Walmart has increased its market share in Canada. Same-store sales have grown by 4.6 per cent in the recent quarter, compared to 2.6 per cent at Loblaws, 2.7 per cent at Sobeys, and five per cent at Metro.

Euromonitor responds to movement towards transparency on labels

Euromonitor research shows that halal and vegan labels are set to grow over five per cent annually from 2015 to 2020—translating to US$13 billion and 708 million additional sales.
Halal products currently bring in US$45.3 billion and are set to reach US$58.3 billion in 2020. Ewa Hudson, head of health and wellness at Euromonitor International states, “Demand for halal meat, an important feature of the Muslim community, is growing rapidly. The Muslim community’s share in the global population has been increasing steady and is projected to reach about 26 per cent by 2030.” In response to the growing vegan market, Hudson says, “Vegan product labeling is one of the key categories to watch in the future, as an increasing number of companies are expanding their consumer appeal by staying away from animal ingredients whenever possible. The rising demand and trend for vegetarian and vegan proteins indicates where the market is moving right now.”
The global market for ethically labeled packages foods, soft drinks and hot drinks (excluding private label) accounted for US$793.8 billion in 2015 and is estimated to reach $US872.7 billion by 2020.
