“Cyto-Matrix is honoured to support the OICC Foundation,” says Loretta Masaro, CEO of Cyto-Matrix. “We are privileged to have this state of the art facility within our community to serve whole patient care to those in need. The OICC represents leadership and is an example to the rest of the country with how their integrative team approach puts the patient first to achieve positive outcomes. As a professional natural health products company, Cyto-Matrix shares this vision. Supporting the Foundation means that more people will be able to access and benefit from this quality care model.”

Changing How We Live with Cancer is a $5 million fundraising campaign to fund essential patient programs, innovative research, and subsidized patient care for those unable to afford integrative cancer care at the OICC.

“We are truly fortunate to have the leadership and endorsement of Bryan Murray and the Senators Foundation in our campaign ‘Changing how we live with Cancer,’” says Dr. Dugald Seely, executive director of the OICC. With the generous support of responsible industry partners like CytoMatrix, I see the goal of expanding integrative oncology services and research as achievable in Canada. We are thankful for this support and hope it spurs on similar actions from others who may be so inspired.”

Vitamin D and androgen receptor-targeted therapy—novel treatment for aggressive form of breast cancer

0

A recent study out of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has found that triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) can be treated using vitamin D and androgen receptor-targeted therapy.

TNBC has generally been unresponsive to hormone receptor-targeted treatments. This significant discovery now offers patients suffering from this aggressive disease a treatment option beyond chemotherapy.

According to Tan A. Ince, M.D., Ph.D., lead author of the study, triple-negative tumors have been unresponsive to receptor-targeted treatments and it was only when they discovered that two-thirds of triple-negative breast cancers express vitamin D and androgen receptors that they were able to treat the tumors using a hormone-receptor approach.”

Breast cancers can be categorized into two subtypes: those which are hormone-receptor positive, and those which are hormone-receptor negative. For hormone-receptor positive cells, hormone-receptor therapy is used to interrupt the role of hormones in the cells’ growth. However, this type of therapy is not an option for hormone-receptor negative cancers like TNBC.

Ince and his team found that although TNBC lacks the three receptors that fuel most breast cancers—progesterone receptors, estrogen receptors, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2—it does express androgen receptors (AR) and vitamin D receptors (VDR). Throughout the study, researchers discovered that by co-targeting AP and VDR with agonist hormones, they could weaken TNBC cells.

SISU transforms curcumin supplements

0

Now SISU transforms poorly-absorbed curcumin from a fat-soluble to a water-soluble phytonutrient, making it more active and delivering 185x better bioavailability and faster absorption than ever before. Unlike native curcumin, SISU starts with a 95% curcumin extract, then uses a unique technology to encapsulate it in “water-loving,” digestive micelles that the body readily allows to pass into the bloodstream. Just 40 mg of curcumin in one softgel delivers the equivalency of nearly 75 (100 mg) capsules of standardized curcumin extract.

Deadline for Health Canada’s homeopathic labelling changes fast approaching

0

Next month, changes will come into effect for certain products that fall under the Natural Health Product Regulations (NHPR), specifically homeopathic cough, cold and flu products for children 12 and under.

Under these regulations, Health Canada will no longer approve specific health claims on these products unless they are supported by scientific evidence. Additionally, it will require any labeling that suggests products of this sort are recommended for treating children 12 and under to be removed entirely. The deadline for these changes to be made is July 31, 2016.

Last year, Health Canada said that the current packaging for homeopathic products “may not be adequate for Canadians to make informed choices.” The Canadian Homeopathic Pharmaceutical Association (CHPA), however, said that these requirements are “a very serious mistake” and a direct contradiction to the widespread endorsement of homeopathic products.

The CHPA also had objections to Health Canada having released this policy decision without consulting “the CHPA, healthcare practitioner associations, consumer associations and other stakeholder associations whose views are normally sought in a transparent public consultation process.”

How will this affect the homeopathic industry?

Serena Yang, the marketing manager for PASCOE Canada, the Canadian Distributor of the homeopathic and phytotherapeutic lines of PASCOE Pharmazeutische Präparate GmbH, notes that this decision will definitely have financial repercussions. “We have to redo all of our marketing materials both online and offline, as well as reprint the packaging in Germany,” she says. “Also, we cannot promote our remedies to children under 12 years old any more, which will definitely affect our sales.”

Designs for Health launches Curcum-Evail™

0

Designs for Health, a professional brand of nutritional products offered exclusively to health care professionals and their patients, has announced the launch of Curcum-Evail™. This highly bioavailable curcuminoid formulation contains a unique combination of three bioactive, health-promoting curcuminoids: curcumin, bisdemethoxy curcumin and demethoxy curcumin, as well as turmeric oil.

The aforementioned curcuminoids are the strongest, most protective and best researched constituents of the turmeric root. Naturally occurring turmeric root powder contains only 5-7 per cent curcumin, while the blend in Curcum-Evail™ is concentrated to contain 95 per cent curcuminoids, which is made up of 70 per cent curcumin.

The crystalline structure of curcumin renders it difficult to absorb in the GI tract. As such, say researchers, “The potential health benefits of curcumin are limited by its poor solubility, low absorption from the gut, rapid metabolism and rapid systemic elimination.”

For this reason, Curcum-Evail™ is manufactured using the revolutionary new Designs for Health Evail™ process, which is an all-natural formulation that improves the absorption and delivery of curcumin. This process uses a proprietary blend of MCT oils, non-soy derived lecithin and vitamin E, without the use of potentially harmful surfactants. This delivery technology increases the absorption rate and reduces the absorption time for nutrients and allows for superior effects through lower dosages.

Curcum-Evail™ is anticicrobial, antioxidant and is a toxic metal chelator. If your patients require immune system regulation, GI protection and healing, cardiovascular protection, bile support or brain protection, consider this product as an option.

CCNM takes part in the International Congress for Integrative Medicine

0

The International Congress for Integrative Medicine and Health that took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, brought together a wide range of health professionals, including medical doctors, scientists, naturopathic doctors, acupuncturists, mindfulness practitioners, nutritionists and pharmacists interested in research, clinical care and education in complementary and alternative medicine.

Five representatives from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) took part, including Executive Director of Research Dr. Dugald Seely ND, Research Fellow Dr. Monique Aucoin ND and three students: Sukriti Bhardwaj, Sherry Purves and Maxwell Crispo. Dr. Aucoin presented two research posters highlighting recently completed CCNM research projects – a meta-analysis of mindfulness-based interventions in the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders, and a systematic review of fish oil in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.

Dr. Seely facilitated a valuable interactive session about messaging and communication strategies to address contentious issues in Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM). Participants networked with other researchers and clinicians, viewed research posters and attended oral abstract presentations as well as seminars and presentations on research methodology in the study of CAM, regulatory and policy challenges and advances, inter-professional education and the use of integrative therapeutic approaches. The congress brought together professionals from around the world and participants left feeling inspired about the state and future of high quality, collaborative research in the field. Abstracts from the conference are published in the May issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Loblaws considers selling gas operations

Loblaws considers selling gas operations

On Friday, Loblaws Cos. said it would entertain offers for the sale of its gasoline business after a strategic review.
Based in Brampton, Ontario, the retailer said its gas bar network is one of the largest in Canada, with 212 retail fuel sites adjacent to Loblaws grocery stores.
The gas bars deliver stable cash flows, though the retailer believes that the right partner would further elevate the business and its value to customers.
“Our gas bars have contributed consistently to our bottom line and our offer to customers,” says Grant Froese, COO. “Customers appreciate the convenience of onsite fuel and the benefits of a loyalty program that links gas bar and grocery purchases. We anticipate that these benefits will continue regardless of whether the business is sold.”
