Last week, Walmart announced that its sales at established Canadian stores increased 6.7 per cent in the first quarter of the company’s fiscal 2017. According to the discount retail chain, this growth was driven by an increase in foot traffic of 4.6 per cent. This news follows eight consecutive quarters of sales increases.

“The performance was driven by improvements in our merchandise assortment and price investment, which led to strong customer traffic growth,” says Brett Biggs, executive vice-president and chief financial officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. “Our e-commerce business also continued to grow nicely with the expansion of online grocery in the Greater Toronto Area. Even as e-commerce investments continued, our ability to leverage expenses led to growth in operating income that outpaced sales growth.”

The retail giant reported a fiscal first-quarter profit of $3.08 billion U.S., while revenues were $115.9 billion. Net income was 98 cents per share, topping the average 88-cent estimate of the 10 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research.

Walmart Canada manages 405 stores, including 319 supercentres and 86 discount stores.

Government of Canada makes reporting drug shortages mandatory

A process has been launched to build and maintain a new independent reporting website. Drug shortages and discontinuances are a source of concern and anxiety for Canadians who have health conditions that require the ongoing use of medication. The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that this issue is addressed.

“We know that having timely, comprehensive, and reliable information will help Canadians make informed decisions about their health-care, and help reduce the stress that comes with threath to both short-term and longer-term availability of the medicines that they and their loved ones need.” Says The Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health.

Recently, Health Canada has taken a step towards making public reporting mandatory for drug companies experiencing shortages and discontinuances by inviting prequalified contractors to submit proposals to develop and maintain a website for reporting this information.

The new website will eventually replace the current industry-run site, drugshortages.ca.

The site will include better notification features and a mobile application. It will also provide information for health-care providers and patients, including shortage management toolkits and guidance materials.

The department is working towards finalizing these regulations in summer 2016.

McKesson and Walmart recently announced an agreement to jointly source generic pharmaceuticals for their U.S. business.

With this agreement, they have expanded their long-term distribution agreement. The agreement leverages McKesson’s expertise in the global pharmaceutical industry and Walmart’s proven commutment to delivering leading health and wellness services at an everyday low price.

“McKesson and Walmart have worked together for decades and throughout our relationship both companies have engaged in an on-going dialogue about how we can work together to bring more efficiency and value to the health care supply chain,” said Mark Walchirk, president, McKesson U.S. Pharmaceutical. “Expanding our relationship to include a sourcing partnership for generics makes economic and strategic sense for both of us—by bringing together our respective scale and sourcing expertise, we will make our businesses stronger and create more value for our customers and patients.”

“Walmart and McKesson have built a strong business relationship over the past 30 years by working together to help lower the cost of health care,” said George Riedl, senior vice president and president, Health and Wellness, Walmart U.S. “The dynamics of health care continue to change, and we’re changing with it. HOXA5 protein may act as tumor suppressor in breast cancer

0

A new study out of Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center suggests that the HOXA5 protein, a gene product known to control cell differentiation and death, may act as a tumor suppressor in the treatment of breast cancer.

Many breast cancers are marked by a lack of this protein, which halts abnormal cell growth. According to Saraswati Sukumar Ph.D., one of the researchers from this study, cells without HOXA5 have an increased capacity to renew themselves and are more invasive than normal breast cells.

Over the course of the study, the scientists analyzed gene expression from human breast cell lines lacking HOXA5. They found that the protein seems to help maintain several traits in normal breast cells, including the ability to adhere to other epithelial cells, and the presence of molecules marking the cells as differentiated and not capable of self-renewal.

Sukumar notes that HOXA5 regulates the production of two other proteins: CD24 and E-cadherin. Without CD24, the cells begin to revert toward an immature, or “stem-like” state, and without E-cadherin, cells lose some of the “glue” that binds them to other cells. As a result, breast cells without HOXA5 were more likely to grow aggressively in lab experiments, forming protruding structures similar to those seen as tumor cells begin to metastasize.

The scientists are planning further study of HOXA5’s role in breast cancer. Sukumar recently won a $300,000 grant from the Avon Foundation to continue her work.

Fish and fish oil supplements boost kidney cancer therapy

0

Scientists at the University of California, Davis have discovered that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—a fatty acid commonly found in fish and fish oil supplements—may be beneficial in the treatment of kidney cancer.

Their study found that DHA reduces renal cell carcinoma invasiveness, growth rate, and blood vessel growth when combined with the anti-cancer therapy regorafenib. Regorafenib works to fight cancer by attacking tyrosine kinases, which are enzymes that activate other proteins. However, kidney cancers mutate to resist these therapies.

“Most renal cell carcinomas learn to escape therapy after a couple of years,” says Robert Weiss, professor of medicine at UC Davis, chief of nephrology at Sacramento VA Medical Center, and head of the kidney cancer working group at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. “A simple additive, which is completely nontoxic, could have a positive effect on disease, even rescuing regorafenib and similar therapies from resistance.”

Going into the study, Weiss and his associates knew that DHA metabolites, called epoxydocosapentaenoic acid (EDP), have the potential to restrain the ability of cancers to invade and grow blood vessels. Unfortunately, an enzyme called soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) usually breaks down and inactivates EDP.

“We knew that regorafenib blocks sEH,” said Weiss. “If you add more DHA and block sEH, all that DHA goes towards creating EDP, which contributes to the anti-cancer effect.”

The team tested the combination against both cancer cell lines and human tumors in mice, finding that the compound killed kidney cancer cells in both models.

Although the results are promising, these benefits are quite narrow, says Weiss—there’s still no proof that fish oil supplements could have any impact against kidney cancer on their own.

“We don’t have any evidence for that so far,” he notes. “It would be premature to make that assumption.” However, these findings do offer a simple way for patients with advanced kidney cancer to increase the effectiveness of their treatments.

Acupuncture may reduce symptoms of menopause in your patients

0

According to researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, acupuncture treatments can reduce the number of hot flashes and night sweats that menopausal patients experience. The year-long study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, was comprised of 209 women from ages 45 to 60 who had not had a menstrual period for at least three months and had at least four hot flashes or night sweats per day.

The participants received a baseline assessment and were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The first received acupuncture treatments during the first six months of the study, but did not undergo them for the second six months. Conversely, the second group did not receive any acupuncture during the first six months, but did for the duration of the study.

After six months, the first group reported an average 36.7 per cent decline in the frequency of their hot flashes. After a year, the benefits persevered, with the group members maintaining an average 29.4 per cent reduction in symptoms.

On the other hand, the second group reported a 6 per cent increase in symptom frequency during the first six months, but saw an average 31 per cent reduction in their symptoms after receiving acupuncture.

“Although acupuncture does not work for every woman, our study showed that, on average, acupuncture effectively reduced the frequency of hot flashes and results were maintained for six months after the treatments stopped,” says Nancy Avis, Ph.D., professor of public health sciences at Wake Forest Baptist and lead author of the study.

“There are a number of non-hormonal options for treating hot flashes and night sweats that are available to women,” she adds. “None of these options seem to work for everyone, but our study showed that acupuncture from a licensed acupuncturist can help some women without any side effects. Our study also showed that the maximum benefit occurred after about eight treatments.”

Avis cautions that these benefits could also be due to outside factors to the study, like any additional care and attention received by the participants. Moreover, she says, additional research is needed to identify individual differences in response to acupuncture.

Ontario launches $20M Fund to support innovative health technologies

0

The Government of Ontario is setting up a new $20 million Health Technologies Fund to support healthcare innovation. This funding may be applied to a large variety of groups from SMEs to multi-national corporations, as long as more than half of the research and development and manufacturing processes occur in Ontario.

“The $20 million fund is designed to support pre-market evaluations and early adoption of innovative Ontario health technologies,” says William Charnetski, Ontario’s chief Health Innovation strategist. “Through it, we will invest $5 million over each of the next four years to accelerate innovation across multiple health care settings.”

Eligibility for this support requires membership of a Health Innovation team, which may be comprised of procurement professionals, tech companies, researchers, or end users (such as clinicians, doctors, or patients). Applicants may apply in one of three project categories: prototype, pre-market evaluation and early adoption.

“The three different categories recognizes that some companies are at different stages of their development,” says Gerry Frenette, executive director of Public and Member Relations at Canada’s Medical Technology Companies (MEDEC). “As it sits right now, we have a lot of innovation that is making its way into the healthcare system, but it’s not easy. The early adoption piece is really helpful.”

This initiative will also involve the hiring of Innovation Brokers, who are intended to help remove behavioural and process-driven barriers to the funded projects. Charnetski says that model candidates for this position are professionals who are well acquainted with both Ontario’s health care sector and its business climate. Additionally, they should have connections and networks that may promote a province-wide culture of innovation.

“We want people who are able to bring insight from a particular geography or sector into the strategic and tactical conversation,” he says.

An Innovation Broker could be the leader of an organization, research team or consortium. Their main purpose is to foster cooperation across Ontario’s healthcare system, with the mind to improve patient outcomes, add value to the system, and grow jobs in the province.
