Trending– Why Black Seed Oil is becoming a top ingredient in health

Black Seed is fairly new to mainstream natural health, but isn’t new to medicine; it was prescribed to Egyptian pharaohs after extravagant feasts to calm upset stomachs. Ayurvedic medicine uses it for hepatitis, fever, diarrhea and coughs. Today, science shows the oil’s unique compounds—crystalline nigellone and thymoquinone—can be beneficial for various respiratory ailments, as a digestive tonic, and a health and beauty aid for hair and skin.

What is Black Seed Oil?

Black seed oil is made from the seeds of the black cumin (Nigella sativa) plant, which belongs to the ranunculus family. The black cumin plant is native to southwestern Asia, the Mediterranean and Africa. It has been grown for centuries for its aromatic and flavorful seeds that can be used as a spice or as a herbal medicine.

Why is it so beneficial to health?

Black Seed contains over 100 active chemical compounds that may increase health. The three ingredients most studied for their effects are crystalline nigellone – well researched for increasing immune function, especially respiratory health; thymoquinone – researched for cancer treatment, a compound not yet detected in any other medicinal plant; beta-sitosterol – highly researched for gallstones, urinary/prostate health, cancer and cholesterol reduction.

Other health benefits include:

  • Help relieve bronchitis
  • Remedy colic in babies
  • Reduce diarrhea, indigestion and heartburn
  • Relieve headaches and migraines
  • Calm insomnia
  • Help decrease cholesterol and increase the elasticity of blood vessel walls to increase cardiovascular health
  • Reduce depression or lethargy
  • Reduce signs of eczema
  • Ease joint pain and sore muscles (acting as an analgesic)
  • Substitute for anti-inflammatory medication
  • Help remedy gallstones and kidney stones
  • Help prevent poliosis (early greying)

Fast facts about black seed

  • Black Seeds are also used in Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Indian cooking, and have a nutty flavour.
  • Black Seed/Black Cumin Seed is not related to the spice cumin
  • Black Cumin is sold as “black seed” or “black caraway,” but for therapeutic value, only Nigella sativa is true Black Seed that contains health benefits.
  • Nigella sativa (Black Seed) has no known negative side effects
  • Black Seed contains good fats: oleic acid (olive oil’s health-giving component), omega 3, omega 6 and omega 7.

Black Seed Scientific Research (with reviews)

Since 1959, Black Seed (Nigella sativa) has been researched in over 200 clinical studies worldwide. Six medical patents have been granted for Black Seed for the following conditions:  (Please Note: this information is for reference and interest only from patent licenses that have been issued by approved government agencies and in no way indicates or endorses that our Black Seed Oil should be substituted for consulting a health professional or appropriate medical treatment.)

Asthma/allergy: Black Seed’s powerful anti-inflammatory compounds reduce symptoms of asthma and allergies. (Pulm Pharmacol Ther. 2009)

Viral and bacterial infections: Since salmonella’s resistance to antibiotics is a worldwide health issue, a study wanted to develop an alternative. Black Seed was found to be more effective against salmonella, even those species for which Ceftriaxone and Ciprofloxacin were ineffective. (Nat Prod Res. 2014).

Immune function: Several peer-reviewed studies show that Black Seed Oil helps to relieve respiratory illnesses such as viral infections, colds, and influenza by boosting the activity of our “natural killer” disease fighters.

Diabetes: Black Seed helps to balance blood sugar levels, and has been shown to be effective to treat type 2 diabetes due to its ability to improve insulin sensitivity. (Saudi Arabia, Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2010 & 2011 study at the University of Montreal).

Psoriasis: Nigella sativa extract produced results equivalent to the effect of the standard drug used, tazarotene, for “eruptions of skin”. It also helps stop psoriasis from spreading equal to drug treatment. (Pharmacogn Mag. 2012).

Cancer: Dozens of recent cancer studies in respected publications including International Journal of Immunopharmacology (2005), Oxford’s Digestive

Disease Sciences (2009), and the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2011) state that Black Seed supports functions of macrophage cells and helper T-cells in cancer patients.

Latest Data on the Opioid Crisis

Latest Data on the Opioid Crisis

More than 9,000 Canadians lost their lives between January 2016 and June 2018

OTTAWADec. 12, 2018 /CNW/ – The opioid crisis continues to devastate communities and families from coast to coast to coast. Collecting and sharing data helps inform policies and interventions that will have a direct impact on the people most affected by this crisis. Data released today demonstrate that the opioid crisis continues. It is affecting people from all walks of life, all age groups and all socio-economic backgrounds.

Today, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) released data on behalf of the federal, provincial and territorial Special Advisory Committee on the Epidemic of Opioid Overdoses on apparent opioid‑related deaths in the first half of 2018 in Canada, as well as data on suspected opioid-related overdoses reported by emergency medical services. In addition, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) released updated data on hospitalizations and emergency department visits due to opioid poisonings.

In the first half of 2018, more than 2,000 Canadians lost their lives. Tragically, that means more than 9,000 lives were lost in Canada between January 2016 and June 2018 to an apparent opioid-related overdose. These statistics suggest that we have not yet turned the tide on the crisis. Of the deaths reported in the first half of 2018 (January to June), 94% were the result of accidental overdoses, of which almost three quarters (72%) involved fentanyl-related substances. This indicates the continuing role of fentanyl contamination of the street drug supply in this crisis, highlighting the vital importance of increasing access to a safer supply of drugs to prevent death and other harms.

In addition to these deaths, thousands of Canadians have also experienced non-fatal opioid overdoses and related harms. Data released from CIHI today show a 27% increase in hospitalizations due to opioid-related poisonings over the past five years. In 2017, hospitalization rates were 2.5 times higher in smaller communities with a population of between 50,000 and 100,000 compared to Canada’s largest cities.

PHAC has also released key findings from a special analysis of the impact of opioid overdoses on life expectancy at birth in Canada. Life expectancy in Canada, which increased by almost three years between 2000 and 2016, has slowed its progress, partly due to the dramatic rise in substance-related deaths, including opioid-related deaths.

The Government of Canada continues to take action, including removing barriers to access to treatment services across the country, improving access to harm reduction services and eliminating the stigma associated with people who use drugs so that they can access the health and social services they need to live healthier lives. We remain committed to working with all levels of government, stakeholders and people with lived and living experience to address the opioid crisis.

Quick Facts

  • From January 2016 to June 2018, there were more than 9,000 apparent opioid-related deaths; 2,000 occurred between January and June 2018.
  • Most accidental apparent opioid-related deaths were among young and middle-aged adults; 20% were individuals between the ages of 20 and 29, 27% were between the ages of 30 and 39 and 21% were between the ages of 40-49.
  • The Canadian Institute for Health Information found that an average of 17 Canadians were hospitalized every day due to opioid poisoning in 2017—an increase from 16 per day in 2016.
  • CIHI also found that between 2016 and 2017, rates of emergency department visits due to opioid poisoning rose in Ontario and Alberta by 73% and 23%, respectively
  • Based on available emergency medical services data between January and June 2018, 71% of suspected opioid-related overdoses occurred among men.

Food price to rise in 2019, report says

Food price to rise in 2019

The average Canadian family will pay about $400 more for groceries and roughly $150 more for dining out next year, an annual food price report predicts.

Food prices will rise between 1.5 to 3.5 per cent in 2019, according to the report from researchers at the University of Guelph and Dalhousie University. That means the average family of four will spend $12,157 next year — up $411 from 2018.

Vegetables will see the biggest price jumps — between four and six per cent for the category, according to the report. But the cost of meat and seafood is set to fall as consumers are adopting more plant-based diets.

Canada’s Food Price Report 2019, an independent analysis produced by university researchers, predicts the price of meat will drop by up to three per cent and seafood by two per cent.

“This is a bit of a risk for us … We’ve never done that,” said Sylvain Charlebois, one of the lead researchers and a professor at Dalhousie University, referring to predicting the decline.

Charlebois also says consumers are showing more interest in alternative proteins, like quinoa and lentils.

“We’re seeing a gradual shift to more vegetarian and vegetable-based diets in the markets,” said Simon Somogyi, one of the lead authors of the Food Price Report

The authors call this the “protein wars” with pulses and legumes replacing meat in North American diets, leading to a fall in demand for meat. In the past year, Canadians consumed approximately 94 million kilograms less beef annually, compared to 2010.

Young consumers are leading the way, with 63 per cent of vegans under age 38. That could mean big changes in the tastes of young families down the road.

2019 Food Price Forecast

Bakery Goods: up 3%

Dairy: up 2%

Food: up 2 %

Fruit: up 3%

Black Oregano Oil: An Immune Booster that Packs a Punch

0
Black Oregano Oil: An Immune Booster that Packs a Punch

During cold and flu season, there’s no better way to protect yourself than by adding Black Oregano Oil to your routine.

Black Oregano oil offers intense natural immune support blending Black Seed Oil (60%) and Oregano Oil (40%) together with Vitamins A and D boosters that make up a powerful immune enhancer, antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral oil.

The unique compounds in Black Seed and Oregano Oil function independently but also synergistically together. Their properties also contribute to respiratory and digestive health.

This blend has an appealing “nutty” flavour that gives added distinction to the Oregano. Together, the superior combination and high-potency concentration can bring quicker action for speedier relief, making this a remedy for every household.

As director of defence, your immune system flies into action whenever an invader approaches, supervising all lines to first protect you – so that illnesses can’t take hold – and if they do, it rallies the troops to heal. But when the flu season brings nasty bouts of fever and respiratory ailments, or a bacterial infection causes lingering pain, your “defence management” may need help from an ally. Medicinal herbs offer safe, potent, fast-acting protection.

Why combine these ingredients?

Therefore, in this type of formula, Black Seed Oil replaces olive oil that is normally used. This is necessary because pure Oil of Oregano on its own is too harsh to consume orally, and can burn the skin if applied topically without a carrier oil such as olive oil or Black Seed Oil.

Who should take this formula?

Consider taking Black Oregano oil when you’re dodging workers’ viruses as often as heavy workload demands, when the kids continually bring more than just homework home from school, when reaching your athletic goals means pushing your body beyond its comfort level to perform, or when you’re resolved to be proactive about remedying chronic inflammation without a prescription.

Historical Benefits

Black Seed, properly called Black Cumin Seed (Nigella sativa), is new to mainstream natural health, but it certainly isn’t new to medicine. Black Seeds were found in King Tutankhamen’s tomb. Physicians prescribed them to Egyptian pharaohs after extravagant feasts to calm upset stomachs. They were used by Queen Nefertiti as a health and beauty aid. They were considered valuable for digestive disorders by Hippocrates, and have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for hepatitis, fever, diarrhea and cough.

Did you know?

Black Seeds are used as a seasoning spice in Middle Eastern cooking. They contains over 100 compounds including three main active ingredients: crystalline nigellone  (well researched for increasing immune function, especially respiratory health), thymoquinone (researched for cancer treatment), a compound not yet detected in any other medicinal plant, and beta-sitosterol (highly researched for gallstones, urinary/prostate health, cancer and cholesterol reduction).

Black Seed also has good fats: oleic acid (olive oil’s health-giving component); poly and monounsaturated unsaturated fatty acids including omega 3 (ALA), 6, and 7.

It’s commonly sold as  “Black Cumin Seed,” “blackseed,” or “black caraway,” but for therapeutic value, only Nigella sativa has benefits.

Health Benefits
Since 1959, Black Seed has been researched in over 200clinical studies worldwide. Six medical patents have been granted for Black Cumin Seed for aiding in:

  • asthma/allergy therapy
  • decreasing viral infections
  • increasing immune function
  • diabetes reduction
  • psoriasis relief
  • inhibiting cancer cell growth

Aurora Cannabis Inc. to Acquire Mexico’s Farmacias Magistrales S.A.

Aurora Cannabis Inc. to Acquire Mexico's Farmacias Magistrales S.A.

Aurora Cannabis Inc. First License to Import, Manufacture, Store, and Distribute Medical Cannabis Containing THC in Mexico

EDMONTONDec. 10, 2018 /CNW/ – Aurora Cannabis Inc. announced today that, further to the Company’s press release dated December 7, 2018, the Company has entered into a Letter of Intent to acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares of Farmacias Magistrales S.A. (“Farmacias”), subject to customary due diligence provisions,  the completion of definitive agreements, and regulatory and government approval.

As previously announced, Farmacias recently became Mexico’s first and only federally licensed importer to date of raw materials containing THC, gaining the necessary licenses, facilities, and permissions to import raw THC material, and manufacture, store, and distribute medical cannabis products containing over 1% THC. This transaction firmly establishes Aurora’s first-mover advantage in one of the world’s most populous countries, where more than 130 million people will have federally legal access to a range of Aurora’s non-flower medical cannabis products containing THC.

Under the regulations governing the Mexican medical cannabis market, domestic cultivation, import or sale in Mexico of dried flower products is prohibited. Consequently, Farmacias is the only company to date with the ability to supply THC containing products, and the only THC-containing offerings available initially will be Aurora-sourced higher-margin derivative products.

Transaction Highlights:

  • Farmacias has been granted Mexico’s first and only license to date to import raw materials containing > 1% THC, a rigorous and exacting process which took over four years to successfully complete.
  • Farmacias owns and operates a high-quality 12,000 sq. ft. facility in Mexico City for the production of pharmaceuticals. The facility is licensed for the import of raw pharmaceutical ingredients, including cannabinoids (THC and CBD).
  • Products available for sale currently include:
    • Pharmaceuticals –  kidney disease, blood pressure, anesthetic medications.
    • Nutraceuticals –  protein powders and vitamin supplements.
    • Cosmetics – anti-aging creams, hair growth products, tanning lotions, etc.
  • Farmacias has developed a strong and well-established distribution network with an extensive potential reach across Mexico through approximately 80,000 retail points for the sale of CBD products, as well as 500 pharmacies and hospitals for the distribution of THC products.
  • Further licenses held by Farmacias enable the company to import CBD concentrate and produce medical and wellness products, and the transaction provides a powerful asset for Aurora in Latin America, complementing Aurora’s large CBD production footprint in Colombia and Uruguay, through MedColombia and ICC Labs, respectively.
  • Dried flower containing THC is currently prohibited for domestic cultivation, import or sale in Mexico, creating a large potential market with strong barriers to entry, permitting only the sale of higher-margin derivative products.

Farmacias intends to use the imported THC and CBD concentrates to produce various cannabis oil products for initial introduction to the medical market. It furthermore intends to rapidly broaden its portfolio of products to include capsules, topical solutions, and sprays and various other delivery formats. Farmacias is currently licensed to manufacture, among others, oral, nasal, and suppository products.

Management Commentary

“This transaction positions Aurora Cannabis Inc. with exclusive access to supply THC-containing medical cannabis to a large market of more than 130 million people, while also enabling us to capture the full margin of the medical cannabis we sell there,” said Terry Booth, CEO of Aurora. “Farmacias has a large distribution network of both retail outlets and pharmacies, which will enable us to quickly scale up our operations across Mexico. Integrating Farmacias with our operations in Canada and Latin America will not only accelerate growth, but it will also build substantial long-term shareholder value.”

Julio Sánchez y Tépoz, Secretary of the Federal Commission for Protection Against Health Risks (“COFEPRIS”), the Mexican government body responsible for medical cannabis licensing added, “We are pleased to have issued the first THC licenses in the country to Farmacias Magistrales, and we look forward to promoting the development of a tightly regulated medical cannabis industry that facilitates safe and effective access for the people of Mexico.”

Neil Belot, Chief Global Business Development Officer for Aurora, noted, “Together, Farmacias and Aurora will be well positioned to become a key player in the development of the medical cannabis market in Mexico. We were impressed by the quality of management, assets and operations, and look forward to working closely with the Farmacias team to execute on our significant first mover advantage.”

Cesar Vargas Dominguez, Commercial Director of Farmacias, added, “This transaction validates our work over the last four years toward obtaining a portfolio of exclusive licenses in Mexico, a complicated process which we have now completed successfully.  Aurora is our partner of choice because of its production capacity, global reach, product quality, patient-first culture, and commitment to a science-based approach to medical cannabis. We look forward to becoming part of the Aurora family and executing on the Mexican medical cannabis opportunity.”

Consideration to be paid for the acquisition of Farmacias will be in shares of Aurora Cannabis Inc. and based on a valuation of the proforma distribution revenue projections of Farmacias. The consideration payable by Aurora also includes a contingent portion of up to 25% payable only upon the achievement of certain milestones over the next 12 months related to operational metrics, such as maintaining market share.

Sears Chairman Eddie Lampert makes $4.6 billion bid for bankrupt retailer

Sears Chairman Eddie Lampert makes $4.6 billion bid for bankrupt retailer

The future of department stores Sears has been hanging in the balance for quite some time since it filed for bankruptcy in October. But now, there may be some hope that the department store chain will be saved by Sears Chairman Eddie Lampert. Lampert has just announced a $4.6 billion bid to save the bankrupt retailer.

Sears Chairman Eddie Lampert’s ESL Investments Inc has made an offer valued at $4.6 billion to buy the bankrupt U.S. retailer, one of the only options that would prevent the department store chain from shutting its doors for good, according to Reuters.

The bid from Lampert’s ESL Investments includes about 500 Sears and Kmart stores, headquarters and distribution centres, and Sears brands and businesses including Kenmore, DieHard and Sears Home Services

“Sears is an iconic fixture in American retail, and we continue to believe in the company’s immense potential to evolve and operate profitably as a going concern with a new capitalization and organizational structure,” the letter read. “We believe that our strategy will enable Sears to prosper in an integrated consumer and retail landscape and view a going concern transaction as essential to providing optimal value to creditors and shareholders.”

In a regulatory filing addressed to Sears debtors’ investment banker, Lazard Frères & Co., Lampert shared plans to purchase the struggling company with an offer that includes up to $950 million in cash, a credit bid of about $1.8 billion and the assumption of an estimated $1.1 billion in liabilities. The acquisition, which would be completed through a newly formed entity called Newco, would consist of other funds such as the rollover of cash collateral as well as a combination of cash and notes.

“ESL believes that a future for Sears as a going concern is the only way to preserve tens of thousands of jobs and bring continued economic benefits to the many communities across the United States that are touched by Sears and Kmart stores,” Lampert’s hedge fund said in the letter sent to Sears’ investment banker Wednesday and filed Thursday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Alto Pharmacy Secures $50 Million in Series C Funding to Accelerate U.S. Expansion

Alto Pharmacy Secures $50 Million in Series C Funding to Accelerate U.S. Expansion

PRNewswire —Alto Pharmacy, a leader in modern pharmacy, today announced it has raised $50 million in Series C funding in a round led by Zola Global and Greenoaks Capital with participation from Jackson Square Ventures, Olive Tree Capital, and others. This funding round will support geographic expansion into new markets across the U.S. and deliver new products for chronic and complex therapeutic areas.

To date, Alto has raised a total of $73 million.

Traditional brick-and-mortar pharmacies, while servicing hundreds of customers a day, haven’t seen their businesses as consumer products, and struggle to communicate with doctors, insurance companies and patients via fax, phone and paper. This causes 20 hours of administration a week per doctor, delays in prescriptions, errors in fulfilment and poor adherence rates. Alto has rebuilt the pharmacy infrastructure to align all stakeholders, engage with the patient and ultimately improve health outcomes.

Through a provider platform and pharmacy management software, doctors and insurers spend less time on administration and more time improving health. For patients, Alto provides same-day free delivery, seven days a week for prescriptions, but more importantly, offers cost transparency, personalized in-app and phone support, and faster coordination with doctors and insurance companies to get patients the care they need.

“In the past three years, we’ve proven that Alto’s model works for doctors and patients alike, reducing administration time for physicians while improving drug adherence rates for patients,” said Matt Gamache-Asselin, CEO and co-founder of Alto. “Alto can cover the same geography as 400 chain pharmacy locations with one fulfilment centre and same day delivery. This capital will allow Alto to reach more patients across the country and fill additional gaps in today’s pharmacy experience.”

Alto Pharmacy plans to roll out new delivery locations beyond San Francisco and Southern California and introduce mail-order services for patients outside of major metro areas. Partnerships with doctors and hospitals have been key to Alto’s rapid growth, with notable providers like UCSF, Stanford, One Medical and more than 10,000 others have selected Alto.

“Alto’s growth is a testament to their focus on improving the patient experience. By reimagining the core pharmacy software, we believe Alto has improved the quality of care and health outcomes for over 50,000 patients in California. We’re thrilled to see Alto bring this service to new markets in the coming year,” said Neil Shah at Greenoaks Capital.

Alto is also broadening its services for complex and chronic conditions requiring speciality drug therapies, which can often overwhelm new patients with paperwork and drug protocols, typically while in the midst of major life changes. Alto’s patient-centred app and support are uniquely positioned to accommodate patients and caregivers for these treatments, with same-day delivery and on-demand pharmacists ready to assist. Alto currently specializes in dermatology, fertility, biologics and HIV and will now deliver to patients in autoimmune (RA), endocrinology (diabetes), and cardio (heart disease).

About Alto Pharmacy
Founded in 2015, Alto is a patient-centric digital pharmacy that improves health outcomes and lowers costs. Alto provides same-day, free delivery, seven days a week for prescriptions, but more importantly, offers cost transparency, personalized in-app and phone support, and real-time coordination with doctors and insurance companies to get patients the care they need. Alto is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in Denver and currently delivers to the Bay Area and Southern California. Learn more at http://www.alto.com
