Magnesium optimizes Vitamin D, study shows

0
Magnesium optimizes Vitamin D

A randomized trial by Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center researchers indicates that magnesium optimizes vitamin D status, raising it in people with deficient levels and lowering it in people with high levels.

The study reported in the December issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is important because of controversial findings from ongoing research into the association of vitamin D levels with colorectal cancer and other diseases, including a recent report from the VITAL trial. It gave confirmation to a prior observational study in 2013 by the researchers that linked low magnesium levels with low vitamin D levels.

The trial also revealed something new — that magnesium had a regulating effect in people with high vitamin D levels. The research provides the first evidence that magnesium may play an important role in optimizing vitamin D levels and preventing conditions related to vitamin D levels.

Qi Dai, MD, PhD, Ingram Professor of Cancer Research, the study’s lead author, described the ideal level as being in the middle range of a U-shape because vitamin D at this level has been linked to the lowest risk of cardiovascular disease in previous observational studies.

However, vitamin D was not related to cardiovascular disease in the recent VITAL trial. He and Martha Shrubsole, PhD, research professor of Medicine, Division of Epidemiology, are investigating the role that magnesium may play with cancer as part of the Personalized Prevention of Colorectal Cancer Trial.

“There’s a lot of information being debated about the relationship between vitamin D and colorectal cancer risk that is based upon observational studies versus clinical trials,” Shrubsole said. “The information is mixed thus far.”

They became interested in a role for magnesium because people synthesize vitamin D differently with levels of the vitamin in some individuals not rising even after being given high dosage supplements.

“Magnesium deficiency shuts down the vitamin D synthesis and metabolism pathway,” Dai said.

The randomized study involved 250 people considered at risk for developing colorectal cancer because of either risk factors or having a precancerous polyp removed. Doses of magnesium and placebo were customized based on baseline dietary intake.

“Vitamin D insufficiency is something that has been recognized as a potential health problem on a fairly large scale in the U.S.,” Shrubsole said. “A lot of people have received recommendations from their health care providers to take vitamin D supplements to increase their levels based upon their blood tests. In addition to vitamin D, however, magnesium deficiency is an under-recognized issue. Up to 80 per cent of people do not consume enough magnesium in a day to meet the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) based on those national estimates.”

Shrubsole stressed that the magnesium levels in the trial were in line with RDA guidelines, and she recommended dietary changes as the best method for increasing intake. Foods with high levels of magnesium include dark leafy greens, beans, whole grains, dark chocolate, fatty fish such as salmon, nuts and avocados.

Co-authors of the study from Vanderbilt include Xiangzhu Zhu, MD, Hui Nian, PhD, Harvey Murff, MD, MPH, Reid Ness, MD, MPH, Douglas Seidner, MD and Chang Yu, PhD.

Curcumin BioBDMC30™ is the new household name

Curcumin BDM30™ is the new household name

Curcumin is quickly becoming a household name and noted to be one of the more potent anti-inflammatory agents amongst the natural therapies. We hear about its application in the treatment of Alzheimer’s, depression, colitis, Crohn’s, arthritis, injuries, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and so much more.

So is this miracle from nature that mystically miraculous, or is there an underlying reason for such broad activity?

One main reason curcumin can be applied with reasonable effect to treat many of these conditions is that inflammation is a fundamental process or chemistry that is common to most if not every disease we face, and this includes diseases like depression that appears to be far removed from our mainstream notion of inflammation.  Most drugs we use to treat disease today are effective at neutralizing this inflammatory activity in target tissues or cells.

Research shows curcumin to be a mildly effective inhibitor of key proteins involved in the escalation of inflammation. As a result, it can be used to take the edge off some of these disorders.

Nevertheless, regular old curcumin (even curcumin 95 per cent) is not reliable and is usually not potent enough to deal with deeply rooted inflammation. Treatment results with curcumin are simply not reliable nor are they precisely repeatable.

The reason is that every curcumin extract is comprised of curcuminoids. Within that 95% extract, three curcuminoids make up the 95 per cent concentration. The problem is extracting these underlying curcuminoid proportions fluctuate and do so even for the same brand from batch to batch or lot to lot.

Our recent research has been focused on separating, isolating and mapping the pharmacology of these curcuminoid components to see how they each contribute to the anti-inflammatory and other subcellular activities that help neutralize disease symptoms.

The findings have led to game-changing insight. These curcuminoids can each have distinct pharmacological activity inside our cells. Even if you are certain you are buying a 95 per cent extract every time, you do not have insight into how the underlying curcuminoid proportions have changed from your previous batch to alter the activity of your curcumin.

Our research shows some of this activity to be synergistic to an intended therapeutic outcome. However, in other situations where the curcuminoid proportions shift it can oppose an intended effect.  Sometimes you get a potent 95 per cent extract and other times you get a less effective one.

The amazing knowledge to come out of this pharmaceutical research with these curcuminoids is a clearer understanding of the mechanism by which curcumin delivers its activity. Moreover, it has allowed us to stabilize and create proportions of these underlying curcuminoids that serve our targets with greater precision and make certain this activity is consistent from lot to lot.

The result of this novel standard of curcumin pharmacology that is now patented is Curcumin BioBDMC30™ – now reliable; more effective, and consistent activity for curcumin that also exceeds 95 per cent concentration.  Curcumin BioBDMC30™ is the new household name.

Dixie Brands to introduce full line of cannabis-infused products in Canada

Dixie Brands Inc. confirmed its plans to introduce a full line of cannabis-infused products to Canadian consumers.  The Company is reviewing the proposed regulations for edible cannabis, cannabis extracts, and cannabis topicals introduced by Health Canada on December 20 and plans to participate in the consultation process.

Based on the breadth of products it has already introduced into the U.S. marketplace, as well as its partnership with Auxly Cannabis Group (“Auxly”) in Canada, Dixie anticipates being ready to launch a fully-compliant selection of products starting when their sale becomes legal in Canada by October 2019.  Dixie expects these products to include THC-infused beverages, THC/CBD topical products, CBD-infused supplements as well as other delivery formats, subject to final Health Canada approval.

“The publication of Health Canada’s proposed regulations is an important step towards clarifying the types of products we will be able to offer in Canada.  Dixie has always taken consumer safety and product quality very seriously, and we have established an excellent track record of working within the unique regulatory frameworks of four different U.S. states,” said Chuck Smith, President and CEO, Dixie Brands Inc. “We believe our nine years of formulation, manufacturing, packaging and regulatory expertise gives us a tremendous first-mover advantage over virtually all other participants in this market.”

Dixie has one of the broadest portfolios of cannabis-infused products in the United States, as well as one of the most recognized brands. Dixie has significant experience in high scale commercial manufacturing in multiple U.S. states.  In the beverage space, Dixie has already developed sophisticated formulation and emulsification technology that many companies are just now trying to develop.

Auxly has secured exclusive rights to manufacture and distribute Dixie’s products in Canada through a licensing agreement first announced on May 14, 2018.  Auxly’s Dosecann subsidiary has a licensed and approved manufacturing facility in Charlottetown, PEI which will serve as the base for development, testing and production of the approved Dixie products.  Auxly’s extensive Canada-wide distribution channels will be instrumental to the anticipated national roll-out.

About Dixie Brands, Inc.

Supreme Cannabis Provides Construction Update for 7ACRES

TORONTOJan. 2, 2019 /CNW/ – The Supreme Cannabis Company, Inc. announces that as of calendar year-end, 7ACRES has 19 completed flowering rooms and is on track for all 25 flowering rooms to be completed in March 2019. Once completed, 7ACRES will have a greenhouse footprint of approximately 300,000 square feet, with the total facility reaching over 440,000 square feet.  Supreme Cannabis expects 7ACRES to reach its estimated annual output of 50,000 kg by the middle of calendar 2019.

Management believes the 7ACRES facility is unique in Canada for its ability to produce high-quality cannabis on a commercial scale. Each of the facility’s modular flowering rooms utilizes industry-leading HPS lighting technology to provide “indoor” quality lighting that is supplemented by the sun to improve terpene and cannabinoid production. The facility’s modular design allows each flowering room to provide variable environmental conditions tailored to the specific needs of the crop in production, while also reducing the risk of crop loss.

An updated timeline of construction completion is as follows:

  • December 2018 – 19 total flowering rooms completed.
  • January 2019 – 3 additional flowering rooms are expected to be completed.
  • February 2019 – 1 additional flowering room is expected to be completed.
  • March 2019 – 2 additional flowering rooms are expected to be completed, representing the completion of all 25 flowering rooms.
  • Mid-2019 – primary office and administrative area are expected to be completed.

Expansion of the facility is subject to Health Canada regulatory approvals.  As flowering rooms are completed, Supreme Cannabis intends to look for opportunities to streamline the Health Canada review process, such as by having groups of completed rooms reviewed simultaneously for licensing.

“We are thrilled with the progress made at our facility in Kincardine, Ontario and are excited to announce that we are nearing completion for all of our flowering rooms,” said John Fowler, President & Founder of Supreme Cannabis. “In our view, 7ACRES sets the international standard for cannabis cultivation and allows us to grow craft-quality cannabis at scale. We believe consumer behaviour has validated our thesis that people prefer higher-quality flower and are willing to pay more for it, and as the market expands for derivative products such as vape pens and edibles we expect consumers will prefer products extracted from the highest quality inputs.

Alzheimer’s preventative care and approach with natural health supplements

0
Alzheimer’s preventative care and approach with natural health supplements

There are 4 Pillars of Alzheimer’s Prevention—that we can better protect and care for ourselves and for our loved ones who are struggling with this disease.

The 4 Pillars of Alzheimer’s Prevention are:

Diet and Supplements—Just like the rest of your body, your brain needs proper nutrition, blood flow, energy, and care. Diet and nutrition can prevent and help treat memory loss.

Stress Management—The effects of the daily grind on your body are well known, but our brain also suffers when we are stressed out. Find out the easy stress-relieving techniques that can dramatically reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

Exercise—It’s simple: if you want to maintain a healthy body and mind, you must exercise. But, in addition to physical exercises, it’s time for you to discover how mental exercises are essential for your health and well-being.

SpiritualFitness—Developing your Spiritual Fitness, your body-spiritual well-being, may very well help reduce your risk of mild cognitive Impairment (MCI) and even Alzheimer’s.

NATURAL HEALTH FOODS AND SUPPLEMENTS

One of the best ways we can feed our brain for better memory is by avoiding a diet high in trans-fat and saturated fat. These fats, such as those from animal products (especially red meats), can cause inflammation as well as produce free radicals. As we know, free radicals are a normal by-product of your metabolism, but in high quantities, they can damage and even kill our valuable brain cells.

  • Eating foods that are high in antioxidants like vitamins C and E is a wonderful natural way to eliminate free radicals from your body.
  • In a similar way, scientists believe that a vast intake of fruits and vegetables, eating fish rich in omega-3 oils and vegetarian protein substitutes (such as soy) are protective against memory loss.

The ideal prevention diet breaks down like this:

  • If you are serious about the prevention of Alzheimer’s and improving memory loss, Be sure that vitamin formula you choose contains folic acid and vitamin C.
  • Folic acid reduces homocysteinelevels—high homocysteine levels put you at risk for both heart disease and memory loss.
  • Vitamin C has been shown to reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 20% when taken with vitamin E.

Consider including the following memory-specific nutrients in your daily vitamin plan:

Coenzyme Q10
Alpha lipoic acid
Ginkgo biloba
Omega-3’s
Acetyl-L-carnitine

For moderate to severe memory loss:

huperzine-A
Vinpocetine

What the Science Says:

GINKGO BILOBA: The MECHANISM OF ACTION
Ginkgo biloba has a neuroprotective effect against β-amyloid proteins, which is of interest to the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease by reducing oligomer formation.

It increases the concentration of dopamine in the prefrontal cortex. It also increases plasma concentrations of BDNF.

SIDE EFFECTS AND SAFETY

Ginkgo leaf extract is Likely safe for most people when taken by mouth in appropriate doses. It can cause some minor side effects such as stomach upset, headache, dizziness, constipation, forceful heartbeat, and allergic skin reactions.

There is some concern that ginkgo leaf extract might increase the risk of liver and thyroid cancers. However, this has only occurred in animals given extremely high doses of ginkgo.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

-Some Medications that slow blood clotting include aspirin, Clopidogrel, naproxen, dalteparin,  enoxaparin, heparin, warfarin interacts with ginkgo and increase the chances of bruising and bleeding.

-Taking Ginkgo along with alprazolam might decrease the effects of alprazolam.

-Efavirenz is used to treat HIV infection. Taking efavirenz along with ginkgo extract might decrease the effects of efavirenz.

-Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) substrates) interacts with GINKGO and effect enhances

-E.g:-clozapine, cyclobenzaprine, haloperidol, imipramine, mexiletine, olanzapine, pentazocine, propranolol, theophylline, zileuton, zolmitriptan, lovastatin, clarithromycin, cyclosporine, diltiazem, estrogens, indinavir, triazolam, and others.

-Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) substrates) interacts with GINKGO and effect decreases. Eg.

-Amitriptyline, carisoprodol, citalopram, diazepam, lansoprazole, omeprazole and phenytoin.

-Taking ginkgo along with diabetes medications might decrease how well your medication works.

-Taking ginkgo might cause seizures in some people.  E.g propofol, antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

-Ginkgo might decrease the effectiveness some people used to prevent seizures. E.g phenobarbital, primidone, valproic acid, gabapentin, carbamazepine, phenytoin and others

DOSES

For dementia: 60-480 mg per day of ginkgo leaf extract, divided into two or three doses, has been taken for up to one year. The most commonly studied dose is 120-240 mg per day with 240 mg possibly being more effective.

Most of the clinical studies on the effectiveness of ginkgo leaf for dementia have used the standardized extracts EGb 761.

HUPERZINE A

It is used for Alzheimer’s disease, memory and learning enhancement, and age-related memory impairment. It is also used for treating a muscle disease called myasthenia gravis.

SIDE EFFECTS:

Huperzine A is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth for a short period of time (less than 3 months). It can cause some side effects including N.V. diarrhea, sweating, blurred vision, slurred speech, restlessness, loss of appetite, cramping, increased saliva and urination, high blood pressure, and slowed heart rate.

DRUG INTERACTION

EFFECTS INCREASES EFFECTS DECREASES
Glaucoma medicines Atropine
ACE’s inhibitor Scopolamine
Pilocarpine Antihistamines
and Tacrine

DOSE

Doses of 50-200 mcg of Huperzine A twice daily for multi in fact dementia.

Doses of 30 mcg twice daily for senile or presenile dementia.

For improving memory in adolescents: Doses of 100 mcg twice daily.

GINSENG

It reduces amyloid beta plaque formation, enhancing amyloid beta clearance, and reducing brain cell death.

Human clinical trials show good efficacy of ginseng extracts in terms of improving scores on the standard Alzheimer’s rating scales.

Panax ginseng contains many active substances. The substances thought to be most important are called ginsenosides or panaxosides.

SIDE EFFECTS

COMMON: insomnia.

Less common:- menstrual problems, breast pain, increased heart rate, high or low blood pressure, headache, loss of appetite and diarrhea.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Alcohol interacts with Panax ginseng

The body breaks down alcohol to get rid of it. Taking Panax ginseng might increase how fast your body gets rid of alcohol.

Taking Panax ginseng along with caffeine might cause serious problems including increased heart rate and high blood pressure

Taking Panax ginseng along with insulin might cause your blood sugar to be too low.

The effect increases with these medicines through Cytochrome P450 (CYP2D6)

Amitriptyline, clozapine, codeine,  desipramine,  fentanyl flecainide, fluoxetine, meperidine, methadone metoprolol, ondansetron, tramadol, trazodone, and others.

Taking Panax ginseng with MAO’s inhibitor might cause too much stimulation. E.g; anxiousness, headache, restlessness, and insomnia

Taking Panax ginseng along with diabetes medications might cause your blood sugar to go too low.

DOSES:

Alzheimer’s disease: 4.5 to 9 grams of Panax ginseng root daily for 12 weeks has been used.

For mental function: 200 to 400 mg of a specific Panax ginseng extract taken once daily or in two divided doses for up to 12 weeks, or 200 to 960 mg as a single dose, has been used.

RESVERATROL

We can get this antioxidant from red grapes, red wine, peanuts, and some dark chocolate. Some researchers think it has anti-ageing properties and can lower your risk of certain diseases.

A recent study showed that daily doses of resveratrol did slow down the progress of the disease.

SIDE EFFECTS

So far, studies have not discovered any severe ones, even when resveratrol is taken in large doses.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

These supplements might interact with blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin), and NSAID medications like aspirin and ibuprofen. That may raise your chance of bleeding.

DOSES

Most supplements contain 250 to 500 milligrams. To get the dose used in some studies, people would have to consume 2 grams of resveratrol (2,000 milligrams) or more a day.

Vitamin E

A recent systematic review found no evidence that vitamin E given to people with mild cognitive impairment prevents progression to dementia. However, there is moderate quality evidence from a single study that it may slow functional decline in Alzheimer’s disease.

SIDE EFFECTS AND SAFETY

High doses of Vitamin E supplements can cause hemorrhage and interrupt blood coagulation in animals, and in vitro data suggest that high doses inhibit platelet aggregation.

Recent results from the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention (SELECT) Trial suggest that vitamin E supplements (400 IU/day) may increase the risk of prostate cancer.

DRUG INTERACTION

Vitamin E supplements have the potential to interact with several types of medications, including anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications, simvastatin and niacin, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

OTHER NATURAL PRODUCTS

Research has shown that taking a multivitamin or high doses of individual vitamins, such as selenium, B vitamins, and calcium and vitamin D, doesn’t have any clear benefits for cognition in well-nourished people.

Although melatonin may help promote sleep in healthy people, a 2014 Cochrane review of two studies found no evidence that melatonin, improved any major sleep outcome in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

OMEGA-3 FA– 4000 mg (combined DHA and EPA) daily. Some food sources include free-range eggs and wild Pacific salmon. Omega-3 fats prevent brain cell damage and lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s primarily by controlling chronic inflammation.

MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE– 400 to 800 mg daily. Evidence shows that higher brain levels of magnesium in the brain improve Alzheimer’s symptoms.

CURCUMIN – 1000 to 2000 mg daily. This powerful antioxidant extract from the spice turmeric is one of the most powerful natural brain protecting substances ever documented. Known as a potent anti-inflammatory for the whole body, curcumin boosts overall cognitive function and has recently been shown to be an effective antidepressant

VITAMIN D – 5000 to 10,000 IU daily.

Vitamin D is anti-inflammatory, and the evidence is clear that vitamin D levels are tied intimately to optimal brain function. It helps nourish brain glial cells that help damaged neurons.

VITAMIN B12 – 5000 mcg methylcobalamin daily dissolved under the tongue. There is now good evidence from neurology journals that regular vitamin B12 consumption can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s.

COCONUT OIL – 20 grams daily of MCT (medium chain triglycerides) is a type of healthy fat that nourishes the brain and has reportedly reversed Alzheimer’s symptoms in some studies (20 grams = 4 tsp; if your skin gets too oily, cut back on the intake). Coconut oil contains 66% MCT which contain ketone bodies (keto acids) that actually both nourish and regenerate diseased brain cells.

COENZYME Q10 – 600 to 1200 mg daily. Best known for its benefits for cardiovascular disease and cancer treatment, CoQ10may slow down and help prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s. Recent studies do show enhancement of brain function after using high doses of CoQ10.

PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE-(PH) – 300 mg or more daily. This is a natural substance used by the brain to basically improve communication between neurons.

SOME OTHER TIPS OF PREVENTION:

Stop Smoking.

Watch your Weight.

Control Blood pressure and Cholesterol.

And finally, Drink only in moderation because heavy alcohol consumption can dramatically raise the risk of Alzheimer’s and accelerate brain ageing.

Safe Food for Canadians Licences now Available for Food Businesses

Safe Food for Canadians Licences now Available for Food Businesses

Food business owners across Canada can now apply for a licence under the new Safe Food for Canadians Regulations by accessing the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s online portal, My CFIA. These regulations will protect Canadian families by making the food system even safer by focusing on prevention and allowing for faster removal of unsafe food from the marketplace.

Food business owners are encouraged to apply for a licence now in order to be ready when the regulations come into force on January 15, 2019. A Safe Food for Canadians licence costs $250. The licence will be valid for two years.

Depending on the food commodity, type of activity, associated risks and business size, compliance with some requirements will be necessary immediately on January 15, 2019, while others will be phased in over the following 12-30 months.

Business owners are encouraged to consult the sector-specific timelines on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website to determine if and when new requirements apply to them.

Businesses that export food products as of January 15, 2019, will now need a licence if they need to obtain either an export certificate or certificate of free sale.

The United States has recently made it a requirement for all Canadian businesses that ship food to the U.S. to meet their new food safety standards. The Safe Food for Canadians Regulations will permit Canadian food businesses to acquire a licence that demonstrates that they meet the requirements under the U.S. Foreign Supplier Verification Program so that they can continue trading with the U.S.

If a business currently has a registration or licence with the CFIA, that registration or licence will remain valid under the SFCR until it expires, even if the date of expiry of the renewed registration or licence occurs after January 15, 2019(provided there is a statement on it indicating that it is also a licence under the Safe Food for Canadians Act). Once expired, the business will be required to apply for a Safe Food for Canadians licence.

The Safe Food for Canadians Regulations will improve and strengthen Canada’s food safety system, enable the industry to innovate and create greater market access opportunities for Canadian food products exported abroad.
