Shoppers Drug Mart steps up with UBC, BCCSU to improve addiction treatment and care

0

The retailer is stepping up to improve addiction treatment and care for all Canadians by supporting pharmacist training and education led by the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU).

A $2 million gift from Shoppers Drug Mart to the University of British Columbia (UBC) will establish the Shoppers Drug Mart Addiction Pharmacy Fellowship—the first of its kind in Canada—and support the development of pharmacist-focused addiction treatment education at the BCCSU.

Pharmacists can be trained to play a critical role in providing healthcare for Canadians who use substances or have a substance use disorder. Through this philanthropic investment, Shoppers Drug Mart is helping to ensure pharmacists are better trained to support prevention, screening, and access to life-saving addiction medications.

“This is a national problem, affecting our patients, customers, friends and family members. Over the past few years, our pharmacy teams have been called upon to help more and more patients struggling with opioid addiction. We want to continue to be a positive force for change, and believe today’s announcement is another important step,” said Jeff Leger, President, Shoppers Drug Mart.

The fellowship at the BCCSU will be part of the largest addiction medicine fellowship program in North America – which provides training and education for dozens of health care providers each year – helping to mobilize expertise and new knowledge to benefit Canadians who use substances or with an addiction.

“In partnership with Shoppers Drug Mart, the BC Centre on Substance Use is developing a comprehensive pharmacist training program that will mobilize expertise and new knowledge to benefit Canadians who use substances or with an addiction,” says Cheyenne Johnson, executive director with the BCCSU. “By working together, we can achieve our shared goal of expanding capacity within the healthcare system from prevention to recovery to ultimately improve the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities who are impacted by addiction.”

Access to evidence-based addiction treatment has been a longstanding and chronic need in the Canadian healthcare system. And now the need to address the harms of substance use has never been greater.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, more than 19,000 Canadians have died of an overdose since 2016, and in the past year fatal and non-fatal overdoses are occurring at the highest rates ever in regions across Canada. Many of those individuals never access addiction treatment. In addition, as Canadians report consuming more alcohol during COVID-19, harms resulting from high-risk drinking and alcohol use disorder are likely to increase. Alcohol use disorder is the most common substance use disorder in Canada, yet it frequently goes untreated and unrecognized, resulting in a high prevalence of disease, social harms and economic costs.

Education and training are critical in raising awareness among health professionals, including pharmacists, on how best to engage with patients, provide life-saving medications and positively impact health services to address substance use-related harms and close the treatment care gap that is leaving many Canadians behind.

“At this time of heightened urgency comes increased responsibility to provide Canada’s frontline health professionals with the knowledge and tools to make a difference in the lives of people affected by substance use and addiction,” says Dr. Dermot Kelleher, dean of UBC’s faculty of medicine, and vice-president, health, at UBC. “I am excited by Shoppers Drug Mart’s decision to support the BCCSU’s leadership in closing the current evidence-to-care gap to address a devastating health issue that is woven into the fabric of our society.”

RCMP charge two people with importing MDMA

Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Border Integrity Unit from the Toronto Airport Detachment executed a search warrant and arrested two males for various offences linked to the importation of MDMA from Italy via the United States.

The investigation began when the United States Customs and Border Protection intercepted a package containing 2978 MDMA pills destined for the Toronto area. They engaged investigators with US Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Effective and timely sharing of information between HSI, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and RCMP investigators allowed police in Canada to quickly identify suspects and obtain a search warrant. Ammunition and documents were seized by the RCMP during the search of a rooming house in Scarborough, Ontario.

MDMA or Methylenedioxymethamphetamine is a mind-altering psychoactive drug commonly known as ecstasy.

Benny Zhang, 42 of Toronto, Ontario and Chunbao Chen, 35 of Scarborough, Ontario have both been charged with:

  1. Importation of a controlled substance into Canada, Section 6(1) Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  2. Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, Section 5(2) Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  3. Conspire to commit the indictable offence of importing a controlled substance into Canada, Section 465(1)(c) Criminal Code;
  4. Conspire to commit the indictable offence of possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, Section 465(1)(c) Criminal Code.

In addition, Chunbao Chen has been charged with resisting a peace officer contrary to Section 129(a) of the Criminal Code. Both accused have been released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear at the Old City Hall courthouse in Toronto on July 7, 2021.

“Transnational organized crime groups and their networks exploit every opportunity to support their illegal operations while causing immeasurable harm to our communities and country. This case demonstrates the value of effective and expedient communication and information sharing between law enforcement agencies. The RCMP is grateful to work alongside committed partners like the CBSA and HSI. We had the resources and expertise in place to act on this information and apprehend and charge these individuals,” stated Inspector Barry Dolan, Officer-in-Charge of the Toronto Airport Detachment of the RCMP.

“These arrests exemplify the incredible joint efforts between U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in dismantling cross-border criminal organizations from trafficking illicit narcotics across the border,” said U.S. Department of Homeland Security, HSI Toronto Assistant Attaché April Miller. “We will continue to work closely to keep drugs off our streets and our communities safe.”

Global Food Prices Keep Rising

0

After the wholesale price of food initially slumped during the coronavirus pandemic, the global FAO Food Price Index has shown a steep increase since the fall. Most recently, food around the world was more than 27 percent pricier than the 2014-2016 average, on which the index baseline of 100 points is calculated. The May figure is the highest of any month in almost ten years.

Palm oil prices have been driving the increase in the index since the fourth quarter of 2020, but global cereal prices also showed a significant bump in the past months, together creating a level of food prices not seen in a decade. Dry weather and production disruptions due to COVID-19 coupled with high global demand led to the depletion of palm oil inventories, in turn driving up prices. As transportation picked up again, biodiesel demand led to an increased need for soy oil. Both developments caused prices for vegetable oils to exceed the 2014-2016 average by almost 75 percent in May.

For cereals, strong demand from China increased prices, especially for sorghum, barley and corn. Worsening crop prospects in Latin America have also contributed to the increase in maize prices.

Can homeopathy aid in Alzheimer’s Disease?

0

According to Dr. Shreepad Khedekar, B.H.M.S., M.D (Hom), homeopathic medicine could offer treatment for Alzheimer’s disease that allopathic medicine simply cannot.

The internationally-acclaimed physician has worked with many Alzheimer’s patients over the years, using homeopathic remedies to aid in the treatment of the disease’s behavioural and memory-based symptoms. He has found this method to be far superior to allopathy.

“Considering that it only has palliative drugs like Tacrine, Rivastigmine, Galantamine, Donepezil and Memantine, which work as Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, allopathy only has marginal benefits with many side effects,” he says. “If diagnosed early, homeopathic remedies can help in significantly arresting or even possibly reversing the disease.”

Dr. Khedekar lists the following as potential homeopathic treatments for Alzheimer’s:

1. Gelsemium – This flowering, yellow plant contains toxic alkaloids, which may cause paralysis of the motor nerves at high doses, but is used to treat anxiety homeopathically.
2. Nux Vomica – Also known as the strychnine tree, this plant is known to aid homeopathically with mental strain and irritability.
3. Mercurius – Mercury has been used for centuries in Medicine. In homeopathy, it is known to aid with memory loss and other psychological symptoms.
4. Alumina – In homeopathy, aluminum oxide has been used to treat mental confusion, a key symptom of Alzheimer’s patients.

If your clients are suffering from Alzheimer’s, consider these homeopathic remedies as treatment. For more information about homeopathy and how it relates to Alzheimer’s, visit Dr. Khedekar’s website at imperialclinics.com.

Study links urinary incontinence in female athletes to low energy availability

0

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common experience for female athletes that can significantly impact their enjoyment of and participation in sports. Previous studies have shown that female athletes who experience urinary incontinence are more likely to drop out of their sports. Noting a large number of female athletes presenting with urinary incontinence, physicians in the Boston Children’s Hospital Female Athlete Program and the Department of Urology wanted to better understand the underlying factors that may contribute to the problem.

We knew that low energy availability, which occurs when athletes don’t take in enough calories to meet the energy demands of their training, has been linked to a number of health and performance problems in female athletes,” says sports medicine physician, Kristin Whitney, MD, MA. Such issues include menstrual dysfunction, poor bone health, cardiac and gastrointestinal problems, and decreased muscle strength and endurance—to name a few.

“We wondered if low energy availability might also be related to urinary incontinence, and what that could mean for our patients.” In a study lead by Kathryn Ackerman, MD, MPH, medical director of the Female Athlete Program, the team set out to explore this question.

Studying urinary incontinence in female athletes

The researchers conducted a cross-sectional cohort study of 1,000 female athletes between ages 15 and 30 who presented to Boston Children’s Sports Medicine Division for any reason. The comprehensive survey included questions about the athletes’ nutrition and general health, exercise and performance, self-reported history of disordered eating, and urinary incontinence during sports.

Of the female athletes surveyed, 16.5 percent reported urinary incontinence during athletic activity. Athletes participating in high-impact sports such as running, cheerleading, and gymnastics were more than four times more likely to report urinary incontinence compared to other sport categories. However, no matter what sport they participated in, UI was far more prevalent in athletes with low energy availability. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Pediatric Urology.

“We were able to discern that low energy availability is an independent risk factor for urinary incontinence across all sports categories,” says Whitney. “If you had poor nutrition and low energy availability, you’d be at high risk for urinary incontinence.”

U.S. meat giant Tyson Foods to launch plant-based food in Asia-Pacific

0

U.S. meat processor Tyson Foods Inc (TSN.N) will launch its plant-based food in select Asia-Pacific markets starting this month, as it looks to cash in on the burgeoning demand for meat substitutes in the region its rivals have set out to capture.

Impossible Foods Inc, Nestle SA (NESN.S), Beyond Meat Inc (BYND.O) have already entered Asia with their plant-based meat products, expecting rising demand for protein from consumers conscious about health, animal welfare and the environment.

Retail sales of meat substitutes in Asia-Pacific reached $16.3 billion in 2020 and are expected to exceed $20 billion by 2025, according to data provided by Euromonitor to Tyson Foods.

“The Asian market is a natural fit for this category with traditional plant-based products like tofu already entrenched in the culture,” Tan Sun, president, Tyson Foods Asia-Pacific, said in a statement.

Tyson Foods, the biggest U.S. producer of animal meat by sales, said on Tuesday it would first roll out plant-based nuggets, strips, and bites in Malaysia under its First Pride brand, with a view to expanding into other markets.

The Jimmy Dean sausage maker launched its plant-based products late last year from its Raised & Rooted brand in Europe.
