On May 30, Janson Kappen from Westmount Charter High School in Calgary, Alberta, won the CIHR Canadian National Brain Bee competition held at McMaster University in Hamilton. Janson competed against 14 students from across the country who won their regional competitions for the title of best brain in Canada. Participants were tested on their knowledge of neuroscience and their skills at patient diagnosis and neuroanatomy. The topics covered include memory, sleep, intelligence, emotion, perception, stress, aging, brain-imaging, neurology, neurotransmitters, genetics, and brain disease. The top three winners of the competition received trophies and scholarship awards of $1,500, $1,000, and $500. Janson will be given the opportunity to work as a summer intern at a neuroscience laboratory and will represent Canada at the International Brain Bee championship in Cairns, Australia in August.
