First Gynecological Procedures Performed with Medtronic Hugo™ Robotic-Assisted Surgery System

0

The Six Gynecological Procedures Took Place Earlier This Month at Pacifica Salud Hospital in Panama City, Panama

Medtronic plc (NYSE:MDT), the global leader in medical technology, today announced the first gynecological (GYN) procedures with the Hugo™ robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) system. The six cases included hysterectomies and myomectomies performed by Salomón Zebede, M.D., and Juan Carlos López, M.D., last week at Pacifica Salud Hospital in Panama City, Panama.

“As the cornerstone of our new robotic surgery program, the Hugo RAS system is playing a critical role in bringing the benefits of minimally invasive surgery to more patients in our region,” said Dr. Zebede. “It was energizing to perform the very first GYN procedure with the Hugo system, and encouraging to experience firsthand the possibility this technology brings to women’s health.”

Globally, more than 60% of hysterectomies are performed as open procedures,1 even though minimally invasive surgery offers fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster return to normal activities.2-4

Pacifica Salud is the latest institution to join Medtronic’s Partners in Possibility Program, a group of pioneering hospitals that will be among the first in the world to use the Hugo RAS system. Earlier this month, the hospital announced its first five urological cases with the Hugo RAS system. Pacifica Salud is also an early adopter of Touch Surgery™ Enterprise, a cloud-based surgical video capture solution that allows surgeons to seamlessly record, analyze, and share surgical video.

“We are witnessing the dawn of a new era in robotic surgery,” said Mr. Rafael Cohen, CEO of Pacifica Salud. “That is made possible by the Hugo system, our partnership with Medtronic, and our talented team at Pacifica Salud.”

The Hugo RAS system — Medtronic’s solution to historic cost and utilization barriers that have kept surgical robotics out of reach for many hospitals — is a modular, multi-quadrant platform designed for a broad range of soft-tissue procedures. In June, Medtronic announced the first clinical procedures with the Hugo system took place in Santiago, Chile. That marked the beginning of the Hugo RAS system patient registry, which is collecting clinical data to support regulatory submissions around the world.

“As an OB/GYN, I’m incredibly passionate about advancing women’s health and wellbeing through less invasive solutions that improve outcomes and enable a better quality of life,” said Carla Peron, M.D., chief medical officer of the Surgical Robotics business, which is part of Medical Surgical Portfolio at Medtronic. “The first GYN procedures with the Hugo RAS system represent an exciting step toward expanding access to more treatment options, including the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery, to women everywhere.”

Medtronic has a longstanding history of making a positive impact on women’s health through technology. The Hugo RAS system joins a portfolio of gynecological products designed to enable less invasive surgical treatment of a range of conditions including abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids, and endometrial cancer.

“I’m proud of the work we’re doing at Medtronic with our healthcare partners around the world to improve women’s health,” said Megan Rosengarten, president of Surgical Robotics. “Advancing access for women to minimally invasive surgical care is a great responsibility and privilege, which makes today’s announcement about the Hugo system all the more meaningful.”

The Hugo RAS system is not cleared or approved in the U.S. or Europe. Regulatory requirements of individual countries and regions will determine availability and approval or clearance timelines. Touch Surgery Enterprise is available in the U.S. and Europe; it is not intended to direct surgery, or aid in diagnosis or treatment of a disease or condition.

Antiviral Paxlovid reduces rate of hospitalization and death among high-risk COVID-19 patients

Health Canada has approved Pfizer’s COVID-19 therapeutic for use in adults 18 and older, paving the way for the distribution of a potentially lifesaving drug at a time when the country’s hospitals are overwhelmed.

Pfizer’s Paxlovid, an oral antiviral prescribed by a doctor and administered in pill form, is designed to help the body fight off the SARS-CoV-2 virus, reduce symptoms from an infection and shorten the period of illness.

After months of clinical trials, Pfizer reported in November that Paxlovid reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by an impressive 89 per cent compared to a placebo in non-hospitalized high-risk adults with COVID-19.

The drug company’s laboratory studies also indicate the drug is likely to work against the Omicron variant, now the dominant variant among new cases in Canada.

The product has been hailed as a pandemic “game changer” by some doctors because it could reduce hospitalizations and deaths among COVID-19 patients.

Experts say an effective pill that’s easy to self-administer at home could relieve some of the pressure on the health care system and change the trajectory of the pandemic. Existing therapeutics approved for use in Canada — products like monoclonal antibodies and remdesivir — must be administered intravenously in a hospital setting.

Dr. Supriya Sharma, chief medical adviser to the deputy minister of health, announces Canada’s approval of a new prescription COVID treatment. 1:29

Speaking at a press conference with reporters Monday, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, said the regulator’s approval is “great news” because Paxlovid could drive down severe outcomes in the current wave and beyond.

“The regulator as well as the experts helping us with the guidance and the supply are all coming together at once and I think Canadians should be very happy today to hear that oral antivirals are beginning to become available in Canada,” she said.

Canada has placed an order for an initial quantity of one million treatment courses, with an option to buy up to 500,000 more. With global interest in antivirals running high as the Omicron variant wreaks havoc, Pfizer is promising to churn out 120 million courses of the treatment by year’s end.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said 30,000 treatment courses have arrived in Canada already and will be distributed to the provinces and territories on a per-capita basis.

Duclos said another 120,000 Paxlovid treatments will arrive between now and the end of March. The federal government is working with Pfizer to bring “additional treatment courses to Canada as quickly as possible,” he said.

Health minister says Canada should have 150,000 Paxlovid treatments by March

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says over 120,000 Paxlovid treatments are expected by March, in addition to the 30,000 already distributed. 1:02

While championing Paxlovid as a treatment that will “save lives, reduce illness and lighten the load on our health care system,” Duclos said this antiviral is not a replacement for vaccines, which remain the best way to keep people out of hospital.

“This is welcome news — we have one more tool in our toolbox. But no drug, including Paxlovid, can replace vaccination and public health measures,” he said. “You don’t want to have to use that pill if you can instead be vaccinated. Vaccination will be a lot better in protecting you.”

Tam said the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is working with its provincial and territorial counterparts to determine how best to distribute antivirals, which are expected to be in short supply for the foreseeable future.

“This treatment, the first treatment taken orally and at home, will be in high demand,” she said. “We anticipate supply at the beginning will not be great anywhere.”

The product, which doesn’t prevent infection, has been authorized by Health Canada for use in high-risk adults with mild or moderate COVID-19 symptoms.

A spokesperson for Ontario’s Health Minister Christine Elliott said the country’s largest province will earmark its share — about 10,000 courses of treatment to start — for adults with “the highest risk of severe outcomes, including immunocompromised patients.”

A person should start taking Paxlovid no more than five days after symptoms start, which could be “one of the key challenges of these antivirals,” Tam said.

‘An important tool’

“They have to be given really early. Not easy, but everybody needs to give it a good try because it could be an important tool going forward,” she said. “It could potentially blunt the severity of the virus, which is a key goal.”

Health Canada said Pfizer’s pills should only be used by patients who have tested positive on a SARS-CoV-2 viral test. Such tests are currently in short supply in some provinces and territories. If a PCR test is not available, Tam said a positive result on a rapid antigen test would also suffice.

Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist and researcher based at Toronto General Hospital, said Health Canada’s approval is “a very positive first step.”

“Everything we’ve heard about this pill is very promising but there are clearly logistical challenges ahead,” he said, adding that careful planning is required to make sure the pills get to those who need them most.

This drug regimen could be useful for people who have underlying conditions that increase the risk of hospitalization and death related to the coronavirus, such as heart disease or diabetes.

It could also be given to the unvaccinated, who are much more likely to experience severe outcomes. Tam pointed to PHAC data that suggest unvaccinated people are 19 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than fully vaccinated people.

Health Canada has warned, however, that the product shouldn’t be used while a patient is on any of a long list of other drugs, including common medications used to treat erectile dysfunction, high cholesterol and seasonal allergies, among others.

“If you’re on certain medications, you have to be careful when using this drug,” Tam said, urging prescribers to review contraindications before writing a script for Paxlovid.

Pfizer’s treatment is meant to be taken as 30 pills over five days. Patients take three pills at a time: two of Pfizer’s pills and one of a low-dose HIV drug known as ritonavir, which helps Pfizer’s drug remain active in the body longer.

The Benefits of Eggnog

0

What is Eggnog?
Eggnog is a spiced and sweetened drink made from cream, milk, and eggs dating back to hundreds of years. Today, the flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg have made it popular in the United States and Canada. This beverage is often included as a part of the abundance at holiday celebrations. This sweet drink can be homemade or bought from the store and is commonly ‘spiked’ with brandy, rum, or even whiskey. Due to its strong flavor, eggnog remains palatable and is traditionally quite high in alcohol content. Consumers should use responsible judgment when adding alcohol ‘to taste’. One can also replace dairy milk or cream by using other alternatives like soy milk and soy-based cream if suffering from lactose intolerance.

Advocaat is a Dutch beverage that is similar to eggnog, except that it’s made using only egg yolks. It is richer than eggnog, and can even have the consistency of a custard. Other cultures have developed similar drinks, including the Polish ajerkoniak, and Mexico’s rompope.

Nutrition
Like most treats, this beverage should be enjoyed in moderation. 1 cup of eggnog contains 19 grams of fat and 344 calories. For perspective, it would take a 40-minute jog to burn those calories off!

Benefits
There are some surprising health benefits to eggnog.

  • Organic milk contains saturated fats that can lower cholesterol
  • Omega 3-fatty acid present in this drink helps prevent cardiovascular diseases.
  • Milk is loaded with calcium, which our bodies need for strong bones, teeth, hair, and nails
  • Due to the milk content, it also promotes healthy ocular function

Eggnog Uses
This beverage has a few uses, including the following:

  • Add it to coffee or pancake batter for a subtle flavor
  • Use an electric mixer to turn it into whipped cream or cake frosting
  • Replace regular milk with eggnog to give your oatmeal

Side Effects

    • The most common side effect due to the overindulgence of eggnog is weight gain.
    • People with milk or egg allergies, especially children, should avoid the drink.

Although hormones in milk are a concern expressed by some, there is currently no scientific evidence that links hormones in bovine milk to cancer in humans or early puberty in children. Dairy alternatives such as soy may contain estrogen-like substances that can disrupt the endocrine system in people of all genders.

Vegan Gastronomy Culinary Academy Partners with Protein Brewery Company to Develop Plant-Based Protein Solutions

0

The demand for animal-free food is growing every day. Integrating animal-free protein that successfully delivers on different criteria has become a necessity.

Vegan Gastronomy, located on Naxos Island Greece, is the world leader in the art of making plant-based dishes using: eukaryotic kingdom, and fungi kingdom developing flavors and textures that give one the experience and appearance of replicating their animal-based counterparts. Protein Brewery of the Netherlands is an advanced developer of animal-free proteins. The two companies are partnered together to take advanced technology and make it a reality for global food consumption that is both healthy for humans, safe for animals, the environment, and is capable of leading a new chapter in food.

The key to this development is the water-binding properties of fermotein, the product developed by Protein Brewery, and the presence of fat (non-saturated), products created with fermotein are less dry and have a pleasant structure, contributing to a gratifying organoleptic customer experience. Most plant-based products use Coconut or Palm Oil. The solutions the two companies have developed do not use either one.

Most animal-free proteins require much flavoring in order to obtain a taste similar to meat. Thanks to the presence of 10% fat, fermotein contains a flavor transport component that will be experienced upon heating and subsequently upon eating.

Protein Brewery’s fermotein has no off-taste. Thousands upon thousands of micro-organisms (fungi) were selected to find the perfect matches in those used to create fermotein. Integrating fermotein into developmental recipes is in alignment with the expertise of Vegan Gastronomy that had experience in working with products like active yeast (Lallemand Corporation), potato protein (AVEBE Corporation), and various algae companies to help elaborate newer flavor experiences in food. This match proves to simplify the life of those who want to create new recipes.

The importance of a Clean Label is key to product development. Fermotein is a pure ingredient containing only brewed fibrous protein, washed, filtered, and dried. Fermotein is not chemically treated or further processed. It is a simple wholesome ingredient.

“No soy, wheat, or other allergen components are part of the development process,” says Manuel Lynch, the key to Vegan Gastronomy’s development team. “We have long focused on the development of allergy-free solutions for vegan cuisine. This partnership is set to expand these developments further!”

“We believe that the marriage of products that we have developed like GLORIA (Vegan Egg), GERBET (Vegan Egg White for Macarons), and PANACEG (Vegan Whole Egg for baking) with Fermotein plans on being an exciting future of possibilities,” says Jessica McKenzie of Vegan Gastronomy.

The combination of Vegan Gastronomy expertise together with Protein Brewery Fermotein is unique in its kind, containing as much fiber as protein, the highest concentration of essential amino acids in a meat-free protein. This is why the combination protein can be regarded as high-grade. The newly invented mixes have the closest amino acid profile to meat and superior to vegetable alternatives.

They are confident that Vegan Gastronomy and Protein Brewery are starting a new chapter in food development together.

Do any probiotics on the market work?

0

Because 70 percent of our immune system is housed in the gut, keeping this organ system in tip-top shape is extremely important. What’s more, according to the Canadian Digestive
Health Foundation, more than 20 million Canadians suffer from digestive disorders every day. As such, the gut health market is a very lucrative category for any natural products retailer. Today, probiotics are taking this segment by storm.
In 2015, the size of the probiotics market was over USD $35 million, a number that is only set to grow; from 2016 to 2023, Global Market Insight predicts a seven percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for probiotic sales. Probiotics help to maintain a healthy, balanced gut microbiome, and are available in many forms, including fermented foods, drinks, and shelf-stable supplements. Many probiotic strains are also available for use.
However, these bacterias come with one pertinent issue: because their delicate structure cannot handle the harsh gastric environment, they often are unable to survive their trip to the lower intestines, where they are desperately needed. Soil-based organisms (SBOs), including lignite extract, may be more effective than traditional probiotics for this reason. While the aforementioned bacteria are often unable to reach the small intestines, SBOs are able to “seed” the digestive tract. This is due to their natural protective shell, which protects them from acidity in the stomach and upper intestines.
Moreover, while this study focuses on lignite extract’s potential for repairing the guts of gluten-sensitive patients, its applications go far beyond just this. Due to its ability to repair tight junction injury, this product is useful for the general maintenance of gut health especially when it comes to protection against harmful environmental and dietary toxins.
Glyphosate, the active ingredient in a popular herbicide, has had an ever-expanding presence in our food supply over the last two to three decades. This chemical wreaks havoc
on the gut and its lining, causing a variety of health issues that include inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, kidney disease, and others.
Because lignite extracts work to restore proper tight junction functions, it has been significantly proven to block the flow of glyphosate throughout the body. This way, it helps to prevent the severe damage glyphosate can cause. As such, a lignite extract is an effective option for all of your clients-those with or without non-celiac gluten sensitivity. By offering your clients an all-around solution to poor gut health, you’ll inevitably boost their quality of life and your bottom line.

Young and Old

According to The Arthritis Society, 1 in 6 Canadians aged 15 years and older are living with a form of arthritis—a number that is expected to increase to 1 in 5 adults by 2036. Although Osteoarthritis—caused by the attrition of joint use—tends to affect those who are 40 years and older, this joint condition continues to be the leading cause of disability in Canada with a wide-ranging impact. As a result, retailers and physicians have the opportunity to appeal to several markets given that symptoms can appear at an early age, and become increasingly worse with age.

While there is no cure for the disease, there are products that work to reduce symptoms and prevent future degeneration, such as Pycnogenol®—a standardized maritime pine bark extract that provides a plethora of health benefits. To combat joint pain, Pycnogenol® contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of procyanidin, an antioxidant and neuroprotective compound that reduces inflammation, supports heart health, longevity, and increases glutathione levels for detox.

Pycnogenol® also contains substances that improve blood flow, strengthen the immune system, and delay the ageing process which has the potential to appeal to both recreational and serious athletes. As such, this ingredient is ideal for the sports medicine market as much as it can benefit the senior market.

Osteoarthritis is caused by inflammation and the inability to repair joint tissue causing stiffness, pain, and overall joint discomfort due to excessive use. Athletes and individuals who exercise often are at risk of developing osteoarthrosis because of constant joint use. When marketing this product, be sure to showcase how Pycnogenol® can boost athletic performance, reduce oxidative stress, and improve the conditions of an active lifestyle.
According to a clinical trial published in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness in 2013, Pycnogenol® has the ability to strengthen muscles and joints when implemented into an individual’s daily routine.
“The daily supplementation of Pycnogenol® offers a natural approach to help reduce post-workout muscular pain, increase levels of physical performance and get you training again sooner,” explains Dr. Gianni Belcaro, a lead researcher of the study. “Pycnogenol®, along with good training and proper nutrition, may help to significantly improve physical fitness and reduce oxidative stress and muscular pain in both in those who exercise recreationally and triathletes.” When everyday wear and tear on joints is what’s causing a patient to slow down and exercise less, Pycnogenol® is an ingredient that assists with endurance, strength, and mobility by reducing the amount of aggressive immune cells that infiltrate the joints through its anti-inflammatory properties. When age becomes a hindering factor of physical mobility, be sure to highlight Pycnogenol® as a means to reduce the discomfort of Osteoarthritis in order to improve one’s everyday life. In either case, the versatility of Pycnogenol® is its selling point—enabling a much less painful lifestyle for all.

Tips to Enhance Your Customer Brain Health Throughout Life

0

By Dr. Fred Pescatore

As we age, our bodies and our mind change and evolve. Most people focus on outer appearance changes, such as skin elasticity, wrinkles, dark spots, and muscle loss.  They become more proactive in their skincare and fitness routines. Your brain deserves the same proactive approach.

Too many of us wait until we notice alterations in our memory and focus, then we take action. Proactive measures on your cognitive health earlier in life can make a significant difference later. A healthy lifestyle and simple actions can keep your mind sharp and boost brain health throughout life. Here are the top tips I share with my patients looking to boost brain health, focus, memory, and mood.

Do your customers exercise regularly. Research shows that exercising regularly has a positive impact on the brain. When you exercise, your heart rate increases and pumps more oxygen to your brain. Exercise also increases and strengthens the number of blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the brain region that is responsible for critical thinking. Even walking regularly can deliver brain health benefits.
Science shows certain natural supplements can help improve focus, memory, and mood. Pycnogenol®, a natural plant extract originating from the bark of the French maritime pine tree has been found safe and effective to support brain function, including memory, attention span and decision-making in a variety of different age groups. The extract has some key health properties including being a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and circulatory health benefits which help explain why it is so effective for brain health. Pycnogenol® helps endothelial cells produce more nitric oxide (NO) which has multiple beneficial effects on brain function. Initially, NO increases blood flow, which improves oxygenation and the transport of nutrients to brain cells. NO regulates neuronal functions and thus contributes to processing signals inside the brain. In addition, NO helps modulate key neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine.
In a recent study, Baby Boomers aged 55+ who supplemented with Pycnogenol® for one year reported a 72% improvement in their daily decision making and a 37% improvement in memory. However, brain fog extends beyond seniors. The past year has made many young professionals need to think about work, home and family all at the same time. One study conducted in 2015 on 59 professionals between the ages of 35-55 showed a 13.4% improvement in their attention, a 9% increase in general mental performance at work and a 16% increase in the general mood when they supplemented with Pycnogenol®.

Younger consumers, especially college students, are also looking for natural products to help them stay focused as classes continue to shift from in-person to virtual. These changes to routine are causing upheaval in their learning environments, which may make it difficult to stay focused. In a study on college-aged students, Pycnogenol® was found to decrease test anxiety and improve mental performance, which resulted in higher test scores.
Pycnogenol®’s benefits are backed by four decades of independent, peer-reviewed research – making it one of the most well-researched ingredients available on the market.
Engage in mental stimulation
Just like we have to work our muscles to stay fit, exercise your mind to keep your brain sharp! Try crossword puzzles, reading new material, writing, playing cards, or putting together jigsaw puzzles. Stay socially active! Research shows that social interaction helps deflect depression and stress, which can contribute to memory loss and mental decline. Be aware of the hours you spend watching television. Just as we do with young children in their formative years, we have to be aware of passive screen time and seek activities that engage and challenge our minds.
