GNC Canada plans to open 25 new stores in 2016. The company opened 23 new stores across Canada last year.

“I am really pleased over the success in Canada,” Giles Houde, President of GNC Canada, says. “It is an exciting time to be in such a flourishing industry.”

GNC has 16 confirmed locations planned for 2016 with the first location to open February on North York, Ontario.

Last year, GNC Canada opened 10 stores in Ontario, four stores in Quebec, three stores across the maritimes, three in Alberta, two in British Columbia, and one in Manitoba.

Canadians favouring frozen over fresh produce due to high prices

Metro CEO Eric La Flèche says that consumers have switched from fresh to frozen produce due to higher prices. This, of course, has impacted natural health retailers.

Nature’s Vibe Natural Health Products, a store located in Cambridge, Ontario, has moved away from selling produce due to higher prices.

Instead, the store partners with Grand River Organics to offer customers fresh produce in another way. Customers order their produce online and pick it up at Nature’s Vibe once a week.

“Smaller retailers are having troubles selling organic produce due to higher prices and increased competition from conventional grocery stores,” says Liz Buck, General Manager for the natural health retailer.

Buck says that natural health stores are moving away from fresh produce and focusing on natural supplements, vitamins, and other organic products.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is getting “younger”

The researchers at the University of Bristo, the U.K., have found that almost two per cent of 16-year-olds have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) lasting more than six months and nearly three per cent have CFS lasting more than three months.

The research, based on 5,756 participants (children of the 90s), showed that girls were almost twice as likely as boys to have the condition with CFS becoming more common in girls between 13 and 16.

The researchers also found that children from families experiencing poor housing, financial difficulties and a lack of practical and/or emotional support for the mother were more likely to have CFS.

Exercising at a young age can change microbial community in your body

The human gut has over 100 trillion microorganisms and according to the research, conducted by the University of Colorado Boulder, exercising at a young age can change microbial community in your body and improve health over the long term.

“Exercise affects many aspects of health, both metabolic and mental, and people are only now starting to look at the plasticity of these gut microbes,” says Monika Fleshner, the senior author of the new study and a professor in CU-Boulder’s Department of Integrative Physiology (Science Daily).

While diverse microbial community remains somewhat malleable throughout adult life, the researchers found that gut microorganisms are especially likeliest to change at a young age. The exact age is yet to be determined, but the researchers encourage people to start exercising as early as possible.

Sears Canada to close more stores

Sears Canada to close more stores

Sears Canada is closing more stores to cut costs and to bring its full-line department store business back to prominence. What does this mean for natural product retailers?

These closures could affect natural product retailers. For example, a mall minus one large department store equates to less shoppers, which, consequently, means less customers for natural product retailers located in the mall.

“We want to fix Sears as a mall-based department store, as a destination for home products in the home stores,” says Brandon Stranzl, executive chairman of Sears.

As sales continue to decline, Sears is adding pressure to CBRE, a real estate firm, to find different uses for the retailer’s weakest stores, such as its clearance outlets. Sears is also reducing the size of its internal network as a way to reduce costs.

Currently, Sears owns 10 outlets, 40 home stores, as well as 95 traditional full-line department stores.

CBC retracts supplement claims

CBC retracts supplement claims

It seems that a CBC Marketplace report claiming that vitamin C and protein products do no not live up to label claims is incorrect.

A retraction from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) stated that after the samples were re-tested, a different result surfaced.

“There is no evidence of problems with (the aforementioned) products,” CBC stated in its retraction.

Supplement companies stood by their products despite CBC’s original claims.

Online shopping jumps 20 per cent during holidays

Online shopping jumps 20 per cent during holidays

According to a recent MasterCard survey, online shopping increased 20 per cent during the holidays. This means that an increasing number of consumers are purchasing gifts online instead of from the nearby retailer or the local shopping mall.

Thanks to the two shopping months prior to Christmas, online sales records were shattered. The survey shows that digital sales in December alone accounted for 9.9 per cent of total retail spending.

In 2015, total retail spending during the holiday season—not including gasoline—increased by only two percent. In other words, digital retailers made lots of money taking in a larger slice of the total year-end retail pie.

“When you compare the relatively slow growth of retail overall with the quick growth of online shopping, it shows the strength and growing preference of the online channel for today’s shopper,” said Sarah Quinlan, a vice-president with a MasterCard subsidiary. “With every device quickly becoming a commerce device, we’ll be watching to see if the growth of online consumers continues beyond the gift-giving season.”
