Top US Plant-Based Meat Companies Are Vying for the Same Territory

0

Along the way, both companies have convinced some of the biggest food and retail brands in the US to sell their products. These brands can be found at Whole Foods, Burger King, White Castle, Kroger, Dunkin’, Subway, and soon perhaps even at McDonald’s. For Beyond Meat, Business was booming enough in 2019 to justify going public.

Despite the fact that Impossible Foods has racked up more product rollouts, it’s difficult to say whether one company is definitively winning the race to get in front of consumers. Impossible Foods—which chose to release its product in restaurants before grocery stores—arguably has more name recognition: It made splashy media entrances into new markets by pairing up with well-known chefs and brands.

Meanwhile, Beyond Meat—which focused on getting its products into grocery stores first—might physically be in front of more people as they roll shopping carts through supermarket meat sections.

The two companies’ strategies seemed to converge in 2019, with each wooing well-known national fast food chain brands. Beyond Meat started showing up on menu boards at Carl’s Jr., Del Taco, Tim Horton’s, Dunkin’, Subway, and KFC. Impossible Foods made headlines by getting into Qdoba and Burger King (it had already inked a deal with White Castle in April 2018).

Neither company appears to be slowing down as they head into 2020. Beyond Meat is already floating that it will expand beyond beef alternatives into poultry, according to Bloomberg; and Impossible Foods is going into the new year as America’s fourth-fastest growing brand.

Still, neither company is without competition. Plant-based alternatives to meat have existed for years and even though a newer company—such as Beyond Meat—might be growing faster, other companies still have solid yearly sales.

To keep their edge in 2020, these two leading companies will have to keep making moves into new markets, flirting with even larger restaurant partners. McDonald’s is testing the popularity of Beyond Meat in its Canadian market. If it performs well, it could give the company a huge edge in the plant-based race.

INC Study Finds Higher Nut Consumption May Help Prevent Cognitive Decline in the Elderly

0

A team of researchers examined whether a diet high in nuts might help protect against age-related cognitive decline over a three-year period.

A total of 119 participants, aged 65 and over with dementia, were selected from the InCHIANTI cohort, a representative population-based study of elderly residents of Chianti, Italy. Participants were selected based on their nut intake: non-nut consumers and regular nut consumers (≥2.9 g/day).

Nut exposure was measured at the beginning of the study with a validated food frequency questionnaire or with an analytical tool for the characterization of phenolic compounds. In addition, cognitive decline was measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination test.

Researchers found that from 119 subjects 38 participants experienced cognitive decline, 28 from the non-nut consumers group and 10 from the nut consumers group. Nut consumption estimated either by the dietary marker or by the urinary marker model was in both cases associated with lower cognitive decline.

“The use of a panel of metabolites provides accurate and complementary information on nut exposure and reinforces the results obtained using dietary information,” said Prof. Andrés-Lacueva, ICREA Academia at the University of Barcelona, Group leader of CIBERFES on Frailty and Healthy Aging and principal investigator of the study.

The study was supported by the INC.

Steve DeAngelo Named an Inaugural Inductee Into MJBiz Awards Hall of Fame

0

“In the computer industry, there’s only one Bill Gates. In the automotive space, only one Henry Ford. And the marijuana world has only one Steve DeAngelo,” said Marijuana Business Daily in their announcement of the recognition.

The announcement went on to list Steve’s landmark accomplishments:

  • Co-founding one of the most well-known dispensaries in the world, Harborside
  • Co-founding the first commercial marijuana testing lab in the United States, Steep Hill
  • Co-founding the first cannabis-focused investment group, The ArcView Group
  • Founding member of industry’s first national trade organization, the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA)

“Those milestones alone would put DeAngelo in the running as one of the most influential figures in the modern U.S. marijuana industry, having helped lay the groundwork for many other cannabis businesses. But another part of DeAngelo’s story is perhaps just as important, if not more so: His willingness to take on the federal government in court,” the statement read.

Steve was a lead organizer and fundraiser for I-59, Washington DC’s medical cannabis initiative; and is most famous for his successful litigation against the Department of Justice, which halted DOJ’s last-ditch 2011 campaign to shut down California’s medical cannabis dispensaries. Recently, Steve has turned his attention to right the wrongs of prohibition. He recently co-founded The Last Prisoner Project. Its mission is to ensure that every single cannabis prisoner on the planet is released.

“Steve DeAngelo is a pioneer of the industry and we owe him a debt of gratitude for blazing a course of integrity, honour, safety, respect and community for all of us to follow,” said Peter Bilodeau, CEO of Harborside. “Harborside is proud to call Steve our own. We extend a heartfelt congratulations to Steve on this well-deserved recognition.”

“The cannabis plant has profoundly and positively impacted my life and the lives of millions of others around the world. Choosing to fight for reform was the easy part, and it is gratifying to see so many countries across the globe embrace cannabis and its healing properties,” said Steve DeAngelo. “Yet, the fight continues. We can’t stop until everyone has safe and affordable access to cannabis – a plant Nature has given us – and every person unjustly imprisoned for cannabis possession is set free.”

Wanda Jones will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas alongside Steve at next week’s ceremony. The two 2019 Hall of Fame honorees will be recognized at the MJBizDaily Awards Gala for their impact on the cannabis industry.

About Harborside:
Harborside Inc. is one of the oldest and most respected cannabis retailers in California, operating two of the major dispensaries in the San Francisco Bay Area, and opening its third Northern California facility and first Southern California retail facility in late 2019. The Company also operates two dispensaries in Oregon and a cultivation facility in Salinas, California. Harborside has played an instrumental role in making cannabis safe and accessible to a broad and diverse community of California consumers. Co-founded by Steve DeAngelo, Harborside was awarded one of the first six medical cannabis licenses granted in the United States.

Natural Toxins in the Global Food Supply Threaten the Health of Underprivileged Communities

0

In 2015, Herman Gibb, Ph.D., M.P.H., found that foodborne arsenic, methylmercury, lead and cadmium resulted in more than one million illnesses, 56,000 deaths and more than nine million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide. His study, “Global burden of foodborne disease: Introduction and methylmercury,” also revealed Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands (Western Pacific B) was the subregion most impacted.

Aflatoxin, a toxin produced by mold that grows on corn and various nuts, including peanuts and tree nuts such as almonds and pistachios, causes liver cancer in humans at a higher rate than alcohol. Now scientists are learning that aflatoxin also harms humans’ immune systems which can result in an impaired response to infections.

In her study, “Aflatoxin in corn and nuts: Cancer and immunological effects,” Felicia Wu, Ph.D., from Michigan State University found that up to 155,000 liver cancer cases globally, each year, are caused by aflatoxin, but aflatoxin also increases inflammation and dampens antibody responses to viruses.

“This might explain why the success of vaccines in low-income countries worldwide has been poor,” states Wu. “Corn and peanuts are stapled foods throughout much of Africa, Central America, and Asia; and since many resource-poor populations can’t afford to throw moldy food away, we suspect many children worldwide are exposed to high levels of dietary aflatoxin.”

Lead contamination, which can occur naturally or as a result of pollution, affects the nervous system, particularly in infants and children. In his study, “Global estimates for the impact of lead from food on IQ and disability-adjusted life years,” Clark Carrington, Ph.D., found that, on average, lead in food is estimated to result in a decrement of about one IQ point.

Unauthorized Health Products Harm Canadians, Health Canada Warns; And Will Enforce Action if Needed

0

The dangers are real. This year, Maria D’Onofrio plead guilty to charges related to illegally importing and selling prescription drugs. The B.C. Provincial Court (Port Coquitlam) sentenced her to 12-months Conditional Sentence including four months house arrest, a four-month curfew and a four-month probationary order. Her associate, Stephen Merry, also plead guilty to charges related to illegally selling prescription drugs. The court sentenced him to 12 months probation and $4,000 fine.

Charges against the two were laid following an investigation by Health Canada into the import and online distribution of thousands of unauthorized prescription drugs, placing the health of Canadians at great risk.

This same year, Robert Lamberton plead guilty to illegally selling and manufacturing natural health products and drugs without a required licence from Health Canada. The B.C. Provincial Court (North Vancouver) fined Mr. Lamberton $10,000 and enforced a one year probation period.

Charges were laid against Mr. Lamberton after a Health Canada investigation uncovered he continued to sell and manufacture health products without required licences, despite repeated warnings to cease his practice.

Health Canada released its first warning to Canadians in 2017, informing them that products manufactured and sold by Robert Lamberton Consulting could pose dangerous health risks.

With these cases open for public knowledge and with serious legal action against illegal drug manufacturers, Health Canada wants Canadians to understand it is taking such activity seriously and that unauthorized health products are not to be trusted or considered as a viable option for health related issues.

Health Canada advises Canadians to look for products with a drug identification number (DIN), natural product number (NPN) or homeopathic medicines number (DIN-HM).

These numbers indicate that these products have been reviewed by Health Canada for safety, efficacy and quality, authorizing them for sale within Canada. Purchasing prescription drugs without being examined in person by a health care practitioner is a risk.

Further information regarding the risks of buying health products online is available on the Health Canada website.

Health Canada is committed to stopping all illegal activities associated with the unauthorized sale of health related products.

What is causing this pain in my back?

0

It can result from injury, activity and some medical conditions. Back pain can affect people of any age, for different reasons. As people get older, the chance of developing Trusted Source lower back pain increases, due to factors such as previous occupation and degenerative disk disease.

Lower back pain may be linked to the bony lumbar spine, discs between the vertebrae, ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, lower back muscles, abdominal and pelvic internal organs, and the skin around the lumbar area.

Pain in the upper back may be due to disorders of the aorta, tumors in the chest, and spine inflammation.

Causes

The human back is composed of a complex structure of muscles, ligaments, tendons, disks, and bones, which work together to support the body and enable us to move around.

The segments of the spine are cushioned with cartilage-like pads called disks.

Problems with any of these components can lead to back pain. In some cases of back pain, its cause remains unclear.

Damage can result from strain, medical conditions, and poor posture, among others.

Strain
Back pain commonly stems from strain, tension, or injury. Frequent causes of back pain are:

  • strained muscles or ligaments
  • a muscle spasm
  • muscle tension
  • damaged disks
  • injuries, fractures, or falls

Activities that can lead to strains or spasms include:

  • lifting something improperly
  • lifting something that is too heavy
  • making an abrupt and awkward movement

Structural problems
A number of structural problems may also result in back pain.

  • Ruptured disks: Each vertebra in the spine is cushioned by disks. If the disk ruptures there will be more pressure on a nerve, resulting in back pain.
  • Bulging disks: In much the same way as ruptured disks, a bulging disk can result in more pressure on a nerve.
  • Sciatica: A sharp and shooting pain travels through the buttock and down the back of the leg, caused by a bulging or herniated disk pressing on a nerve.
  • Arthritis: Osteoarthritis can cause problems with the joints in the hips, lower back, and other places. In some cases, the space around the spinal cord narrows. This is known as spinal stenosis.
  • Abnormal curvature of the spine: If the spine curves in an unusual way, back pain can result. An example is scoliosis, in which the spine curves to the side.
  • Osteoporosis: Bones, including the vertebrae of the spine, become brittle and porous, making compression fractures more likely.
  • Kidney problems: Kidney stones or kidney infection can cause back pain.

Movement and posture
Back pain can also result from some everyday activities or poor posture.

Examples include:

Example of poor posture when using a computer
  • twisting
  • coughing or sneezing
  • muscle tension
  • over-stretching
  • bending awkwardly or for long periods
  • pushing, pulling, lifting, or carrying something
  • standing or sitting for long periods
  • straining the neck forward, such as when driving or using a computer
  • long driving sessions without a break, even when not hunched
  • sleeping on a mattress that does not support the body and keep the spine straight

Other causes
Some medical conditions can lead to back pain.

  • Cauda equina syndrome: The cauda equine is a bundle of spinal nerve roots that arise from the lower end of the spinal cord. Symptoms include a dull pain in the lower back and upper buttocks, as well as numbness in the buttocks, genitalia, and thighs. There are sometimes bowel and bladder function disturbances.
  • Cancer of the spine: A tumor on the spine may press against a nerve, resulting in back pain.
  • Infection of the spine: A fever and a tender, warm area on the back could be due to an infection of the spine.
  • Other infections: Pelvic inflammatory disease, bladder, or kidney infections may also lead to back pain.
  • Sleep disorders: Individuals with sleep disorders are more likely to experience back pain, compared with others.
  • Shingles: An infection that can affect the nerves may lead to back pain. This depends on which nerves are affected.
Risk factors

The following factors are linked to a higher risk of developing low back pain:

  • occupational activities
  • pregnancy
  • a sedentary lifestyle
  • poor physical fitness
  • older age
  • obesity and excess weight
  • smoking
  • strenuous physical exercise or work, especially if done incorrectly
  • genetic factors
  • medical conditions, such as arthritis and cancer

Lower back pain also tends to be more common in women Trusted Source than in men, possibly due to hormonal factors. Stress, anxiety, and mood disorders have also been linked to back pain.
