Healthcare platform Ping An Good Doctor unveiled its first staffless, AI medical clinic and pharmacy at the Wuzhen World Internet Conference earlier this month.

The ‘One-minute Clinics’ include a Smart Medicine Cabinet and Independent Advisory Room. Patients enter the AI medical clinic’s booth to receive a virtual consultation. This is initially via Ping An’s ‘AI Doctor’ software, which helps assess a patient’s condition and supports the company’s human physicians’ diagnosis. Patients can then get their prescriptions from the attached Smart Medicine Cabinet vending machine, which stocks over 100 medications; any medicines not in stock can be purchased through the Ping An app and delivered in an hour.

NRF says more than 164 million consumers to shop over five-day Thanksgiving weekend

WASHINGTON – Retailers are preparing for one of their biggest weekends of the year as an estimated 164 million people are already planning to go shopping Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday, according to the annual survey released today by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics.”

“Whether it’s heading to the stores after finishing their turkey or going online on Cyber Monday, consumers will be shopping all weekend and retailers will be ready to meet the demand,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Retail is a vibrant, dynamic and competitive industry, but one thing is certain – consumers are the winners no matter which day or which way they shop.”

The survey found that of those planning to shop during the long holiday weekend 21 per cent (34 million) plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day, but Black Friday will remain the busiest day with 71 per cent (116 million) planning to shop. Forty-one per cent (67 million) are expected to shop on Small Business Saturday, and 78 per cent of those say they will do so specifically to support small businesses. On Sunday, 20 per cent (32 million) are expected to shop. The shopping weekend will wrap up on Cyber Monday when 46 per cent (75 million) are expected to take advantage of online bargains.

Of those shopping this year, 65 per cent said they are doing so to take advantage of deals and promotions retailers will offer, while 26 per cent cited the tradition of shopping over Thanksgiving weekend and 23 per cent said it is something to do over the holiday weekend and the same number said it is when they start their holiday shopping.

“While the long weekend always draws shoppers of all ages to take advantage of the irresistible deals and promotions that retailers are offering, we’re seeing a change in how the younger consumers see the weekend.” Prosper Insights Executive Vice President of Strategy Phil Rist said. “Compared to older generations, younger consumers under the age of 35 are more likely to be attracted by the social aspects of shopping over the weekend or by the fact that it is a family tradition.”

The survey, which asked 7,516 consumers about their shopping plans, was conducted October 29-November 7 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points.

NEVER Network Again: The Art of Un- Networking

Networking is dead. It doesn’t work. The days of firehosing and spitting out every single detail, award and certification in 30 seconds or less are over. If you think this type of networking works, if you are stilling doing it – stop! Immediately. The bottom line: no one cares that much about you, well, besides you and your parents.

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of networking is:

1: the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions specifically: the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business

We are moving away from the first point of a straight exchange of information (un-networking) and focusing on the second part: cultivation of productive relationships.  It’s about connecting. I call it the ABC’s: Always Be Connecting. Not Always Be Closing with your 30-second elevator pitch.

If you’re going into a networking setting with a mindset to quickly get through as many people as possible and get as many cards as possible, then you’ll attract the exact same people to you. They’ll be trying to go through the numbers just as fast or even faster than you. It almost feels like a competition.

When you collect lots of cards, at the end of night do you really remember each person who gave it to you? What is your follow-up with each person? Nine times out of ten, nothing meaningful happens from the connection. Sounds familiar? (Where is your deck of business cards and are they just gathering dust?).

In a networking setting, you need to stop being the giver. What I mean by that is stop trying to give your pitch to everyone in the room. Focus on being a receiver and a relationship builder. Genuinely ask about the other person and their business, the type of clients they are looking for and how you can help. Choose to stand out from the typical: my name is … I do x-y-z verbal diarrhoea.

The goal of “un-networking” is to meet people in a genuine way, be your unique self, build rapport and get permission to connect with them outside of the networking session.

Who you are “being” is exactly who you will attract. Be the person you would hire, be the person you would love to send referrals to, be the person you would welcome the opportunity to work with.

Let me set the stage for you: If you had a company in which you were the CEO, and you were hiring for the role of COO, what would you expect and want from that person. Make a list of those attitudes, attributes, personality traits and skill sets.

Now ask yourself:   Are you that person?

Because…if you wouldn’t work with, refer or hire YOU, neither will anyone else.

Here are the 3 steps that you can take to un-network:

  1. Go in with a plan. A plan that consists of connecting with a handful of people instead of everyone. It’s easy to remember someone who engaged you in a meaningful conversation opposed to remembering your 15th shallow conversation.
  2. Ask open-ended questions instead of closed ones. Open-ended questions allow for deeper answers with more detail.
  3. Only take the other person’s card if you’re going to use it. When I say use it, I mean use it for yourself or to give it to someone else to forward as a referral.

Now the ball is in your court, it’s time to use what I’ve shared and master the art of un-networking.
