Japanese research shows green tea may reduce short-term memory loss

Researchers from Japan have studied the effect of green tea extracts on a number of cognitive functions, including short term memory. The study supported the potential benefits of green tea, which has been linked to reducing Alzheimer’s and some form of cancers, helping with weight loss, as well as cardiovascular health and oral health.

For the study, 12 elderly people consumed two grams of green tea powder per day for three consecutive months with a test taken at the beginning and end of the study. Their results had improved from a 15.3 average to a 17.0 average by the end, showing an improvement in their short term memory.

“Our results suggest that green tea consumption may be effective in improving cognitive function or reducing the progression of cognitive dysfunction in elderly individuals,” the scientists wrote. “And that it may similarly reduce the progression of vascular dementia.”
