Exercising in water: Big heart benefits and little downside

According to the February 2016 Harvard Heart Letter, a water workout in a warm indoor pool is an excellent alternative to walking, which many people often find unpleasant in harsh winter weather.

 

“Recreational swimming will burn about the same calories as brisk walking,” says I-Min Lee, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who studies the role of physical activity in disease prevention.

 

Lee says swimming takes stress off the joints, allows people to relax, offering stress relief and improving cardiovascular health.
