Pharmacy Loyalty Programs Legal in Alberta

In 2014, the Alberta College of Pharmacists wanted to impose a ban on pharmacies using loyalty programs. Now, a Court of Queen’s Bench judge has ruled that the regulator of Alberta pharmacists does not have the legal power to impose such a ban.
Sobeys happens to find the ruling encouraging.
“At a time when many Albertans are facing economic challenges, the court’s decision is particularly welcome news,” Vivek Sood, spokesman for Sobeys National Pharmacy Group, said in an email.
With its amendment of its code of ethics, the College stated that pharmacists and technicians are health professionals, not only vendors of pharmaceuticals.
The new ruling will give pharmacists a chance to make prescriptions and services more affordable.
