World Health Organization Is Showing Major Concern For Drug Resistant Sexually Transmitted Diseases

It’s becoming less easy to treat common sexually transmitted diseases, including gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia, because of antibiotic resistance, reports the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO has reported “resistance of these STIs to the effect of antibiotics has increased rapidly in recent years and has reduced treatment options. Of the 3 STIs, gonorrhea has developed the strongest resistance to antibiotics. Strains of multidrug-resistant gonorrhea that do not respond to any available antibiotics have already been detected. Antibiotic resistance in chlamydia and syphilis, though less common, also exists, making prevention and prompt treatment critical.”

With this awareness being pushed through social media by WHO, they are continuing to stress that condoms are the most effective methods of protection. AHF President Michael Weinstein stands by this and says ““The continued global concern around the rise of drug resistant sexually transmitted diseases underscores the importance of using condoms.”

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have shared that gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported notifiable disease in the Unites States. Prompting last year for the White House to release its National Action Plan to “Combat Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria” (CARB). CDC’s Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) has expressed that they are supporting new and continued activities that aim to slow the growth of antibiotic resistant and put a stop to the spread.
